Never tried VR. Some advice would be very much appreciated!

o7 good folks!

I've never tried VR but last night I ordered a Reverb G2 to play ED with. It will arrive tomorrow and i'm so excited!! It has been a dream for many years now. Was hoping someone experienced with VR could throw me some tips.

Once i plug it in i need to get "Windows Mixed Reality for SteamVR" and "SteamVR" right? Am i good to go after that?

Also any tips on what settings you think works well with the G2 in ED and my specs?

I run a rtx 3090 with a 5900x and 32gb ram.

I will do my best to research all this but would really love some input!

Yes, SteamVR and WMR for SteamVR.

I start them up first (for me, just starting SteamVR automatically starts the WMR portal), then start ED. If for some reason the game doesn't immediately start in VR go to the graphics section in Options (in the game) and make sure that for the 3D setting you have an HMD option selected.

As far as settings, with what you have I'd expect ultra or high frankly. I'm running nearly that with an old GTX1080 and it's fine, although in SteamVR I do dial back some of the settings, so I'm not getting the full G2 resolution. Even so, the game runs fine, pretty smooth, a couple of stutters opening some station menus, but text is crystal clear even so, and most stuff looks really good. Am upgrading with a new PC that will have an RTX3080, so expect to be able to bump up the resolution when that arrives.

You might need a few reboots after installing all the stuff until the various programs got to know each other. And it might be worth it to activate the SteamVR beta stream (which only is possible if SteamVR isn't running - took me a week to figure that out).

On my setup, WMR starts up from the sensor in the reverb, SteamVR seems to be triggered afterwards when I fire up ED.

I got a reverb G2 a couple of weeks ago. That was an upgrade from my Rift (not Rift S). The video clarify blew me away. However, the product is a half baked POS in my mind. HP released an untested product and is leaving it to the community to report problems, most of which they have no work around yet. In short, the headset is very unstable at the very least.

If you're running a 3090, that's definitely overkill. So you should have no issues running everything in Ultra mode at 90FPS. For Elite specific settings, this YouTube video hit many things spot-on. I found that after I turned down some of the unnecessary settings, the headset was more stable. I'm running a GTX1080 but all the benchmarks show that I am well within spec. Even Steam's own test utility states that this card exceeds most VR requirements.

Here's where you will run into a problem. The USB interface to the Reverb is defective pure an simple. I'm just about to do some more performance tests with two new add in cards but stability is an issue that is well documented now that the product has been shipping for three months. I suspect it's a power related issue in that HP is using a hackneyed approach to USB by supplying a USB C to USB A dongle and a vastly inferior cable design. If you get an error 7-14 or error 1-4, the first is USB related the second is video cable related. If you do a search on those two errors, you'll find the Internet awash in those complaints and here's the thing, HP is totally ignoring these posts on their own forums. Not even acknowledging them.

Re-seating the cable will fix the issue for most cases. But sometime a power cycle of the system is required. Be thankful that you don't have an AMD card with a RYZEN, the stories there only get worse. HP has released a new cable exclusively for those systems. I mean what??? How can a specific CPU or Video card be affected unless the design of the headset was defective? Again, this indicates that HP sent this out totally untested on the AMD platform.

Last tip. HP recommends plugging directly into the USB 3.0 port on the motherboard, not on the extender on the chassis and not on an add-in card. I experimented with both. I found that unplugging the other devices on the other USB ports also made for a more stable gameplay. This again is indicative of a power related problem.

Good luck and let us know how you do.

Specs should be more than fine, I run a 3900X+1080Ti (she just keeps on going...) and do well with both the OG Vive and a Samsung Odyssey+. Install is simple, once you get Windows Mixed Reality set up, you can go download Windows Mixed Reality for SteamVR, and then download SteamVR itself. EZPZ.
