New Alpha Joiner

Of course in fictional space dogfighting, you can't actually stall since you are not flying aerodynamically but instead changing course with engine thrusters

Thanks for the info Chock. I guess better turning rate could be explained that some of your "engine power" isn't applied to forward acceleration, but lateral thrust to bend your curve.
Although that would mean that rotation speed (not turning) would be highest when not using your main thrusters (e.g. slowest forward acceleration = highest rotational speed).

Of course the ultimate answer is "because it's more fun" :)

Perhaps I need a better control method. ATM I'm playing with keyboard and mouse. Do you chaps recommend a joystick for this? Is it easier?

First up, welcome to the alpha. Hopefully the connectivity issues will be sorted soon, I've only got into the station twice so far due to them so have been mainly replaying the single player missions.

I ended up getting an X52 Pro after borrowing an older stick from a colleague for a while (which was OK, but only had about 6 buttons), and it's a great improvement over gamepad or keyboard& mouse control.

I figured that it'd be worth spending the money between using it for Elite: Dangerous and Star Citizen.

Welcome to the forums, and to alpha - take your place in the queues waiting to get in to MP :)

I've always been a keyboard + mouse player, and ED is certainly playable that way, but after a couple of hours practice I was converted to using a HOTAS setup. Mine is a Thrustmaster TFlight, not particularly expensive, and I'm told not quite up to the standard of the T52s and 55s, but it suits me just fine and is definitely a step up from a mouse.

It's hard to articulate exactly why a joystick is better - it's not simply a matter of fine control, although there is that to it. I can only say it feels "natural" somehow. Mine has 3 axes of control, with twisting the stick mapped to yaw. This means it gives a very nice flow of control in turning that you can't get with a mouse - yaw plus roll and pitch.

I've found with a stick I eyeball the target more (particularly if I'm using TrackIR at the same time), but with a mouse I'm more dependent on the radar.

Welcome aboard

A lot of people are using the Saitek X52 or X52 pro which works very well in game.

The Warthog also gets very good reviews

Combat is definately very fun with a hotas system

Enjoy the alpha!

Welcome aboard! Pretty soon you won't be able to sleep without dreaming of Cobra Mk3's. :)

:D

Lol. That was last night, and I'm not even kidding! Struggled to get to sleep and not think about highspeed turns with FA off.

How do you know what's in my head?
