New bindings for Beyond exploration...ugh

I need advice on this. It's actually off-putting knowing I have to figure out all new keybinds for a new system I'm totally unfamiliar with.

Doesn't look like it assigned even default keybinds. I have pages of them to assign, from simple Switch HUD mode to Enter FSS mode to all the different camera controls and even Night Vision, not to mention the constant "X is already bound to x"

Is there somewhere I can just download default keybinds for just the exploration stuff and then fine-tune it the way I want?

You don't mention what controller(s) you are using but you could have a look here: https://edrefcard.info/ (click on View list of published bindings), look for schemes for your controller and see which one you like - if you are lucky someone may have added one with just the FSS controls, though chances are slim.

Keyboard + mouse. I gave up on my HOTAS setup, I'm actually much better and more precise with k+b.

I'm thinking I'll just duplicate my camera controls for FSS and all that, if I want to bother later. And that's the thing: too many times over the past few months I've wanted to fire up a session of ED only to remember I need to create new keybinds and then say "screw it I'll just play something else"

Having recently started the game myself, I went through this rather recently (I started with a downloaded bindings file that pre-dated the changes you're talking about), it only takes a few minutes to set up the keybinds. All of the FSS keybinds, other than the one to open it, can overlap with any other keybinds you have because the game recognizes it as a different mode, so you shouldn't see much of the messages about keybinds already being in use.

For nightvision, I don't even bother with a keybind...I just go into the ship menu in the right hand panel to turn it on and off. I have a key bound, but never remember what it is and am always too lazy to check my reference sheet.

Ahh good, I can just use my camera keys then. I'll do that later and check out all this new discovery mumbo jumbo.

Ok not for nothing but this FSS is an annoying pain in the butt. What was wrong with honking and flying to the planets? Why couldn't USS be added to that somehow, instead this weird convoluted system that takes way more time than it used to? Tuning in to these signal sources while looking at that map is even worse than chasing signal sources in a SRV, but at least I can make that exciting by racing and jumping.

Don't even know how to activate DSS yet.

Oh and while I'm sitting there trying to figure things out I'm getting interdicted by pirates.

Can't disagree with you there. I'm totally new to this game (about 5 weeks in now) and FSS is the thing that I have the most negative to say about. If you look in the suggestions section of the forum you will see a recent thread where others are also picking at it...seems it's been hotly debated since it was added. I personally really dislike it, and find it immersion breaking to boot. It just doesn't "feel" like it even belongs in the game.

Once you get to know it, the FSS is far, far faster than flying around a system. I've only been playing 6 weeks, and I did need to find a youtube tutorial on it, but it clicked eventually.

A little practise and you can open the FSS (defaults to the [ ' ] key), look at the frequency bar, and judge exactly what type of planets/signals are in the system in a few seconds - before you scan them for details. You'll quickly learn how to focus on the high-paying bodies (or the signal sources), meaning you don't waste time on things that don't have any value. As an exploration tool, it's a big time saver.

DSS is a left or right click - bind it to a fire group :)

For bindings, in order to use your mouse, make sure you set the Mouse x-axis and mouse y-axis under the FSS section of bindings. It's down near the bottom. I set them to yaw, and pitch-inverted respectively. I actually have a T.flight hotas x, but for FSS the mouse navigates it much more quickly.

For FSS tuning right and left, you probably want to set it to a key. I also have the mouse wheel bound to this, but it's super slow. (for me, the throttle rocker switch axis is what I primarily use for it).

Set zoom in to mouse 1, and zoom out to mouse 2 is my recommendation.

Those respective settings above are everything you actually "need" to use FSS. All the rest of the bindings for it are optional depending on if you want things liked stepped zooming, etc.
