I will be building a new rig to replace my AMD Phenom 2 I understand that an i5 is better for general-purpose gaming then going with an i7 cost to performance wise but what about with VR in question? It seems that the 6600 K is below the recommended i7 for VR support according to the passmark cpu chart. So if I have VR in mind is it best to go for the 6700k?

thats a loaded question...
depending on price, if I were you id certainly look at the 5820k and the 6700k.
the old i5 is enough for gaming is an old saying and I do not believe in it anymore.
there was a time where single core performance was the most important thing and these fancy 6core+ were being under utilized...
it really all depends on your budget...
if i was trying to do this on a budget, id get the devil's canyon 4670k
it is a beast and has great OC.
if i had the cash for fun new motherboards and processor types 6700k for sure.
Vr is gpu intensive more than cpu...but do you want to buy an older generation mobo and cpu and be stuck there for the future? or maybe you would prefer the 5820k/6700k for a tad more futureproof ness?

I have been out of the pc hardware game for a long time, last system I built was back when the P4 3.06ghz just made a splash. I've been a console player for the ease and convenience since before COD4 came out.....
The system I have now I got off a guy who needed some scratch and I wanted something to get me flying in Xplane 10. But now I've got the bug, went full hotas and pedals, and looking to VR has me wanting more.
So to you guys, this may sound like an elementary question, or loaded, or whatever, but it is sincere. I'm being told the 6700k is a waste and go with the i5. But chances are once I build this thing it will be a long while before I upgrade with the exception of the gpu, which I'll see what comes with the new stuff that AMD and Nvidia is bringing this year. I dont mind waiting as im not going to jump on VR until it settles down bit and there's plenty of stock available. I'm not in a big rush, heck my current rig I have is still on DDR2..just sayin.
