New Class of Ship - Planet Destroyer

Crazy idea that will never happen in ED. But you gotta admit it would be a whole lotta fun!

Lots of planets out there to blow up. Of course the easiest ones to target are inside the Bubble, don't need to travel as far. Imagine the bounty placed on the pilot!

Helping out the galactic circle of life. Eventually gravity will bring the chunks of debris back together again. You just gotta think on the galactic time scale.

Meanwhile, if our galaxy gets too unpleasant we can always move on to the next nearest galaxy. No need to live in our own garbage pile. :)

Planet destruction as we see it in popular fiction, especially movies, is really just the blowing up of small-scale mud-balls (few 100 metres at most). The visual effects types have never gotten the scale right when it comes to geology or planetology, especially the time-scales.

If you want to read a bit about it, I can recommend Greg Bear's "The Forge of God". It is not a bad take on planetary destruction. And yeah, it takes a while to happen and may not result in bits flying spectacularly everywhere.

Then there's the implications for the game world, including orbital reconfigurations in the affected systems...

:D S

No.

Nothing is destructible by players in this game, except other ships and players no larger than a medusa. That's the law. No rocks, no station, no barnacle, no megaship, no PMF controlled outpost, no promised fleet carrier.

This is necessary for those dystopian roleplayers to still believe in this grim dark universe that is Elite Dangerous. Outside the narrative tropes of the videogame, they would be completely lost trying to impersonate supermario.

So where will you fly to on the 2nd day after this is released?
Because there are some, ahem, murder hobos, that would "turn the bubble into slag just for lolz", and the instant it is announced they will be saving/stocking up.

How about:

The planet destroyer needs at least 50 players to work in the same instance together to make sure the 'death rays' cover the planet correctly. Players may not operate it in supercruise.

Planet Destroyer Ship Details:

Base Ship Cost: 250 million credits. Ship includes:
  • Specialized Planet Buster Gun (Ultra Mega Huge Hardpoint mount):
  • Specialized Planet Buster Containment Chamber
  • FSD Max Jump range with engineering: 32LY

Each ammo charge requires 50 destructonium. Available only as ultra rare raw material found on planet surfaces.

Each ammo charge requires compressed destructonium loaded into the containment chamber. This can only be loaded into the chamber within the gravitational field of a supermassive black hole. Currently that is Sag A*. The ship's containment field can hold only one charge of compressed destructonium. Once loaded into the chamber the ammo charge must be used within 8 hours, or else it needs re-compression.

This is all based on science.

I didn't realise we were playing Babylon 5 or Lexx, I thought we were playing Elite Dangerous.

I believe the devs did consider making the station destructible in early stages of the game, but then realised after every single base and station was destroyed they might have a problem retaining players, because every single one being destroyed is almost guaranteed, as suggested earlier. There are okayer groups around who would make that their primary objective. Of course they would call it "Emergent Gameplay," but that's just a lie they use to hide being s, welcome to the galaxy. What? No you can't dock anywhere, and no you new player you can't have a spaceship because there is nowhere to give you one, all the docks having been destroyed, and no you can't repair, once your space ship is dead it's dead, you don't get another one, so that's it for ED...goodbye!

Imagine the emergent gameplay of the peaceful folk constantly migrating and the planet destroyers catching up. Cat and mouse. Sounds good to me.

Easy solution. Every Tuesday the galaxy is reset and all those planets are back and the people on them are happy as clams...until blown up again. You keep hearing their screams "Why does this keep happening???!!!!!"
