New CMDR question

Happy new year fellow commanders.

New pilot here, started literally today, and im doing all tutorials but, I am going crrrrrrazy with the overly sensitive mouse.
Ive had the auto-return to center option on and off, played with the sliders, and while im in a Sidewinder i can kinda manage now, but it feels like it all just went out the window again when I was flying one of those deployed-from-a-ship ships (fighter?).

It feels like no matter how minimal i move, my reticle just acts like Michael Jordans basketball on a good night for him - but im practically going nuts :D

Any tips or advice on how to better control this jank?
I know I am going to love this game once I can actually control the flight, so I kinda want to bang out some successful basic pilotting.
Thanks in advance!!

EDIT: I have watched a couple tutorials for keybinds and what all the options do, but i'm halfway leaning towards trying this with a xbox controller.

Honestly I've never tried to fly on keyboard and mouse (although I'm aware the PvP experts love the precision).

I did fly on a PS4 controller back in the day (before buying a stick) which worked acceptably, so a pad might be worth a try.

Perhaps you have mouse acceleration active in Windows settings

I dont remember if I adjusted it much but all the controls are available to set to your liking (I also play mouse/kb)

There's quite a few who play using an X Box controller or similar. The good thing is that you don't necessarily have to choose between the two, the alternate bindings can be used to span them across multiple controllers so for certain things you can stick to keyboard/mouse. I have nearly all bindings set with a HOTAS and a trackball.

Also, double check that you aren't in flight assist off mode. If so, switch back to flight assist on.

These are my settings for kbm faoff. A couple of things to note:

You can set the in-game mouse sensitivity above a little lower (slide it to the left a little). This setting is in conjunction with your native mouse DPI. My mouse native dpi ranges from 800-3000, and most CMDRs I talked to use native dpi between 800-2000.

I assume you fly 'faon', a setting controlled somewhere else, under FLIGHT MISCELLANEOUS / TOGGLE FLIGHT ASSIST
Make sure this setting is 'on' initially. To check, when you are in flight, look to the top right corner in cockpit with the header INFO, where it shows the time as well. If in red you see the text ASSIST OFF, then you are in faoff. You should be in faon initially, e.g. you should not see the text.

The relative mouse setting mode is 'toggle' and normally it is 'on'. If you accidentally turn it off and you also turn off flight assist (in faoff), you could get chaotic behavior. However you will also get chaotic behavior if you simply turn off flight assist and have no experience flying faoff, regardless of using a mouse or a controller.

Have you got flight assist switched on. That stabilises your ship. I don't know what the default key is for it because i fly with sticks, but you can find what key does it in your keybindings that are in the Options/Controls menu at startup. When it's switched off, you get a little sign that says so at the top right of your HUD to the left of the clock.

+1 to checking your flight assist first thing. If you come from that other space game and like flying decoupled there, it's an entirely different ball game here, and very difficult with KBM, because directional control is entirely manual with flight assist off, and the nose of your ship will obey all of Newton's laws. If you are having issues with flight assist ON, then just keep practicing, and when you have some money, try bigger ships. The sidewinder and the ship-launched fighters are among the most maneuverable ships in the game, and slower-responding ships will tame the jank for you.

Flight Assist being turned off sounds like the first thing you should check, yes. Additionally, selectively disabling Flight Assist for certain situations can be quite useful, for example if an enemy ship is behind you and you can't shake him off - turn FA off, pitch your ship to face the enemy, turn FA on again and blast him.

One more thing: When trying to land in tight spots or without a docking computer at a station, set engine pips to zero to make the ship more controllable. that will work in any situation, but it'll make your ship too slow to fly around. When you have a Sidewinder with fully-engineered performance enhanced thrusters and 4 pips to engines, trying to get it on a landing pad is like throwing darts at a dartboard from 20 meters.
