It is getting mostly positive feedback so I am re-posting a version of it here and apparently yes, this is a thing:

New CMDRs - Welcome!

When you get your first Sidewinder and in fact, with every ship you purchase the first thing you should do is CHECK THE SIZE OF THE INSTALLED CARGO RACKS! The cargo racks that come with your new ship will often be HALF-sized! A new CMDR might fly around for days, weeks or even months not knowing he or she could be carrying twice as much cargo and earning twice the credits (bigger rack = bigger, better paying jobs) so CHECK THOSE RACKS! o7
