Ships New Cobra?

Another month, another threadnaught on releasing the Cobra MkIV to everyone. I've made my opinion clear on the other thread, but there are a lot of very unhappy players who would like to purchase one.

It seems that Frontier Developments aren't about to grant that wish for them.

So is it worth releasing a new Cobra, functionally identical or even slightly improved over the Cobra MkIV?

The new ship would be cosmetically different to previous Cobras (especially the MkIV), but close enough to the MkIV to equal or better it's performance.

What do you say? Yay or nay, preferably with a reason why.

I say yay, for three reasons.

  1. Clearly there's a great deal of interest in owning a Cobra IV amongst some players. They have many reasons justifying why they should have one. Providing them with a functional clone would satisfy many, most or all of their stated reasons for wanting access to the ship.
  2. There are already families of very similar ships in game- Federals, Kraits, Alliance Chiefs. Adding an extra model to an existing line fits FDs previous releases and they've shown their ability to give a distinctive visual look to those vessels.
  3. The value of the Cobra MkIV lies mainly in it's exclusivity- it was sold as a time limited exclusive, not as an upgrade to the existing MkIII, which retained notable handling and speed advantages over it's younger sibling. As long as the new Cobra is clearly visually distinct, that exclusivity would be retained.

Over to you...

Sure, I'd never object to more variants added. But, I think most people who want the Cobra MkIV just want it because they can't have it. This wouldn't shut them up.

I think a lot of people have that feeling based on the preconceived notion of jealousy they come into that conversation with as opposed to actually finding evidence of it. When you go in thinking no one would want it on it's own merits because you don't agree with those merits the conclusion builds itself regardless of the actual arguments.

Frontier should keep all current Cobra IV cosmetics available only to those who currently have one, then offer a Cobra IV ship kit to the rest of the plebs. Purchasing this kit would unlock the ship, and the ship would not be able to power up without at least one piece of the kit installed.

To retain the exclusivity of the original Cobra 4, this kit and any future paint jobs would not be available in outfitting for accounts with access to the original, and no prior paint jobs would of course work on the new kitted cobras.

No doubt flying around in a Cobra IV with a kit or non-original paint job offering would be a shameful experience that would actually add to the exclusivity of an original Cobra IV at no additional cost to those who have them.

No; for all those arguing to keep the exclusivity of the C4 this would mean breaking the agreement in spirit if not in fact.

And for all those wanting a C4 because they can't have it this wouldn't change that fact either.

But for those wanting a small ship with the versatility of the C4 (as in, slot counts etc), release another small ship with similar stats but from a different manufacturer and completely different looks. I wonder how many would actually end up not only buying such a ship but actually using it for longer term play. Money is just too easy to come by these days so ship progression no longer makes as much sense as it used to.

I'd like to be able to fly a Cobra MkI, and would be happy for it to be another exclusive or premium ship. Ditto for Jameson's Cobra MkIII.

I'd prefer the current Cobra MkIV to be renamed to the Cobra MkII so avoiding the implication that it is supposed to be a better compromise than the much loved MkIII.

A Cobra MkV (or IVa) using the best aspects of both current Cobras would be a popular ship in my view, effectively a smaller, cheaper Krait.

OP of the other thread (I did not expect over 1000 replies or to restart such a big hoopla lol, oops 😬 ) like the first reply, I’m all for more boats. Preferably ones that are more unique than ones we have now. How fitting to start something off with a new Cobra? A name that’s been with Elite since the beginning. Personally I don’t think t would end the debate, which honestly I still don’t know where I stand on it. I think mostly it’s for PS4 players and completionists that will want a crack at the actual MKIV. I have the MKIV on Xbox myself (not on PC tho). As an owner of one I don’t mind at all if they do release it fully or even just in JM. But of course I cannot speak for everyone who got the Horizons exclusive. But, to your point. a big ole YES to more ships. Always yes :p

To add to the idea of new ships including a Cobra MKV, how about a Sidewinder X? The lowly Sidewinder we all started in gets so little attention. How’s about a new one made to unseat the AspX as the king of Expo ships? Make it effectively a FSD with a chair strapped to it. Don’t need guns for an exploration ship so the two small HP are fine and really all it would need is a bigger FSD, little bigger fuel tank and one upgrades slot for a larger scoop. Since we don’t need a slot for an ADS anymore the slots that remain already are fine enough for a hanger and a DSS. Maybe make it’s topped out G5 jump just a smidge higher than a Jump-a-Conda, but of course it retains the great meneauverability of the sidey.

I'm fine with this. If people want an ultra-cheap newbie void opal machine, fine go ahead and introduce such a ship, it seems to be what a lot of people are really wanting.

I'd even welcome a Sidewinder kit that resembles a Cobra and weighs it down. You see, like those Russian freaks who build Bugatti Veyron bodies onto their Ladas out of plywood, plaster and duct tape!

Nay: On the grounds that you are calling it a Cobra.

If they produced a ship, identical to the cobra IV and called it cobra (whatever), they are cheating. Call said ship something else and lose the basic cobra shape and we have a deal. Same module space, same hard-point and other slots, speed etc. and call it anything; except cobra and that is find by me.

I have to say that I am thinking of ignoring this subject in general. I have been called, dishonest, labelled as stupid and had posts removed, without good reason; especially when considering what others are getting away with.

I’d buy this in a heartbeat. Heck I’d slap down $10 for the kit if it came with an exhaust kit that promised to make the Sidewinder mimic the sound of a Cobra but really just makes it sound buzzy and terrible.

Yeah the other thread turned into a crap show of ad homenims and off topic fighting. Honestly wouldn’t have even broached the subject if I had known that’s where it would go. My apologies for that honestly.

Here in East Europe, smart boys created their sports exhaust muzzles from two empty luncheon meat cans. It looked quite real from more than ten meters.
Knight Rider lights would also make a welcome addition, although we already have string lights...

After thousands of Cobra Mk IV posts over 5 years I would say that Frontier has decided they are not going to release it.
Nor would another "almost but not quite" replacement ship work. There have been lots of new ships released that are
better than the CIV. Still the posts keep coming simply because they cannot have it. Sorry.

The Cobra Mk III is also the definitive ship from all the Elite games across MANY platforms with a history and tradition.
Adding a third "Cobra like" ship takes away from the legacy that is the Cobra.

Oohhh...Add the "woosh, woosh" sound, a William Daniels (voice of K.I.T.T) Clovas, and play the theme song in
the background. What a great tune for a Conflict Zone! While we're at it let's download the Airwolf theme as well.
