New Commander - Would Like Tips To Success

Hello commanders, I just started my ED game file and was wondering if anyone could help me with tips and ideas to become a successful commander and become prozperous*

Check all the youtube beginner tutorials. Short version:

Make your first million or two by stealing kills from security in High RES sites.

After that it really depends on personal preference but I would take part in every community goal and pick a home system that has good ships and outfitting, a few res sites or compromised nav beacons nearby (usually high population high tech and industrial systems are not too bad) and become allied with all factions there. Once that is done you can make good money with passengers or cargo missions.

For beginners I recommend the following ships:
Combat: Viper III or Viper IV and after that Vulture
Missions: Cobra III - Asp Explorer
Passengers: Also Cobra III and Asp Explorer filled with economy cabins.

Set yourself some goals. The main killer of this game for many is that lack of guidance and direction. Read the forums, always have Inara.cz, eddb.io and coriolis.edcd.io open in a browser (I use my smartphone mainly) for reference. You want to visit Earth? A worthy goal. Make sure you only work for the Feds until you've earned enough reputatoin with them to get the Sol permit (new players cannot go to Earth). This will also unlock my favourite combat ship for you, the Federal Assault Ship, at the same time. Consider that at some point you are going to want to travel 5000ly in order to fulfil this requirement to access the most important engineer, professor palin. You will have MANY hoops to jump through before you even get to him, but consider doing the 5000ly of exploration sooner rather than later (as soon as you have a ship that can jump more than 40ly, a cheap option is the Diamondback explorer), because you will be able to get to grips with the main mechanics of the game, flying around, in and out of supercruise, etc, etc, in a safe environment (everything stops and you are alone once you get outside the bubble), get a decent exploration rank, bam, just like that (helpful for high paying passegner missions, which have payouts based on your exploration rank), and you'll be ablet o decide if one of the core mechanics of the game (exploration) is at all appealing to you (and if it isn't, don't worry, there are plenty of other things to do!) plus you will make around 30m credits just from disco scanning, a lot more if you use a surface scanner on a few high value planets. When you get back you'll be ready to build your next ship.

I'll give you this tip, forget prosperous for the moment, as you're starting out with a sidewinder, prosperous is a long way off, I suggest short hop trade loops, these will help you save for a better ship, one with more cargo space and longer jump range, the link below will help you find trade loops.

Oh and PS, get used to the flight mechanics, or they slap you in the face.

1. Lern to not drop into a star while fuel scooping.
2. The galaxy is yours.

Buy ships and parts in Li-Young Ryu systems and don't lay out targets too far ahead of your capabilities.

My top tip is to explore the game for yourself, and learn it's intricacies using as little outside information as possible.

Part of my enjoyment of the game has been/was learning how it all works.

Then again, I enjoy figuring out systems and problem solving.

Try doing every career role and mission type in the game to discover what you find fun. Have a target/goal and just work towards it while frequently changing the way you achieve it.

I recommend aiming for something like 'Elite' rank in one of the 3 disciplines (Trade, Combat or Exploration) and find as many routes to achieve this along the way.
Make some friends in Open/Mobius group as some of the best gameplay this game has to offer will be had when flying with other cmdrs.
Don't make 'getting an Anaconda/Cutter/Corvette your end game goal. The ships are tools, nothing more. They all have their advantages and disadvantages depending on what you are trying to do. Many, many hours into the game and there is still lots of fun to be had in the simple Sidewinder or Cobra.
Get a HOTAS (and Rift/Vive if you can afford it!)
Extra time spent configuring your HOTAS controls is never wasted.
Expect the game to be frustrating at the beginning, its learning curve is steep but rewarding.

Never buy or fly what you can't afford to lose.

Don't Be in a Hurry.

Contrary to popular misconception, there is no "End Game". Having the biggest and most expensive ship will not make you a better commander.

Your bank roll is not a measure of your progress, your skill is.

Patience, Persistence and Perseverance will serve you best.

In space, no one can hear you scream. In Open, someone wants to hear you scream.

Nothing is as hard as it might seem - once you understand what you need to do.

Discretion might be the better part of valor, but a fast high wake will ensure you are able to be discreet.

The Newcomer's forum is full of useful information.

Dangerous Discussion is high in sodium and cholesterol.

Nothing says "Welcome to Elite" than being blown up for no obvious reason.

To begin with at least, play Solo. There are some warped human bullies out there who will pick on new CMDRs just because they can. When you feel you can hold your own, you can go Open if you want to.

Forget about combat for now - wit til you have a better ship with better guns and your better combat ability.

You need money, so that you can get a bigger ship, so that you can make more money, and do so faster.

You have very little cargo space on your Sidewinder, so ordinary trading is a slow way of making money.

A quicker and safer (from being attacked) way of making money is doing data missions, as they don't take up any cargo space.

Be aware though that:
- some data missions attract hostile attention, so try to avoid those, and
- some data missions give goods as well as money, and if you haven't the cargo space to accept the goods, you can't turn the mission in at the other end to get paid. So at least one of your two slots should be a cargo bay (I think they can hold 4 items?) and then just check when you select a mission that you will be able to hold the goods, if any - you can usually sell them straightaway (nice money sometimes), but you have to be able to receive them into your cargo bay first.

Look through all the data missions on offer at your spaceport before you pick those that suit you best in terms of (a) do-ability and (b) payapit.

You may want to use some of your earnings to get a better FSD for your Sidewinder, as it will let you make longer jumps.

Good luck!

The first thing I would say you should do is ask yourself what you want to do, what sounds most fun to you. If you figured that out, ask around how to make good profit with that, most things can be made very profitable.

Not all tough, if for example PvP is your answer then... mhhh... well that won't make you rich ^^

Sure, here's what you do.

First go to youtube, and memorize all the tips, tricks, and tools of the trade people recommend for easy money.

Then I want you to NOT do those things. Successful ED players are the people that can ignore the grind and have FUN with this game. So do a little of everything, and figure out what "fun" is for you. Mine a little, trade a little, explore a little, get blown up a few times, figure out how to do everything and by the time you've done a little of everything you'll know what you want to do for the rest of your ED experience.

Do that for long enough and money will probably happen, unless you've picked something stupid like PVP or crashing into asteroids. Then you'll have to grind some money to pay for your favorite activity. I don't recommend doing things that way but whatever floats your boat.

Point is there is no "right" way to play and no matter what advice we give you, the only real answer is to figure out what works for you and then do that. We can't really help you there, beyond a few helpful tips about how to do what you eventually decide you want to build your game around.

Welcome.

Just play the game and do the things you like to do.

Find a home base, build up rep within that system and surrounding ones. Then do missions you want to do until you can upgrade your ship or buy a new one.

Try your hand at combat, bounty hunting, mining, exploration, scavenging, trading, smuggling, rares, and find what you enjoy. It's fairly simple. Oh and don't fly without your rebuy covered,.
