New computer setup. Advice?

So I'll be getting back into Elite soon. Been away a while now. But I just bought a new desktop and am in the process of reinstalling everything in preparation for VR. So I wouldn't mind some advise on doing it right the first time (and if I got the right hardware for the job)

i7 10700 8 core 2.9/4.8GHz, 16GB cache
Zotac GeForce RTX 3070 8GB
32GB Corsair Vengeance RAM 3200MHz

I remember Dr Kai's program was a good start.

You have the power then just figure the YR headset you like. There are only 200 posts on the Forum you need to read.

Computer looks fine personally 3080 W/10gb vram is my sweet spot, I assume your nvme/SSD for games and system drives. Again assuming you’ve got HOTAS as well.

Get elite from frontier as opposed to Steam or Oculus then grab the keys for which ever route your HMD takes you.

what HMD are you getting?

I have a lifetime pass ;). I'm using a Lenovo WMR headset from my old setup and a TFlight HOTAS. I played Elite a LOT when it first came out, mostly in VR right up till last year or so. But that rig barely cut it (gtx970 card on a 3rd generation i5 with 16GB Ram)

Now that I have a new rig I want to make sure I set it up right for max enjoyment :)

Hey mossfoot, nice to see your name around again o7
Your hardware looks great. Enough cores for a start.
I've used/got a Lenovo Explorer. Your 3070 will do a great job of running it, like you I was using it on a 970 to start with and then a 1080ti which did a great job and the 3070 is way more powerful.

Dr Kaii's program is essential.
Microsoft WMR has some useful stuff in it, including how to turn on reprojection if you want to use that. You 'might' be ok with the 3070 for solid 90fps but if not the reprojection (effective 45fps) might be useful.

Otherwise just enjoy :)

Thanks sugrr. I hope I am okay for 90fps on this setup. Would love to enjoy smooth framerate on high graphics settings. I'm pretty sure that reprojection was the only thing making Elite playable back when I was using the 970.

Of course, I'm NOT looking forward to having to port over my joystick configuration, or Voice Attack, or any of those other things I had running and completely forgot about ;)

Since you used the same headset as me, I could have sworn I saw on the forums here that you could add windows to your game (ie a desktop link) without using a third party app, just through WMR. Is that true?

BTW, this is the first time I've had a graphics card this high... so I don't know if there is anything special I need to know about getting the most out of it. Like I see things about DXR being on or off?

Me too, but I choose to use it with the 1080ti as I prefer higher settings over the (limited imo) downsides.

Oh yeah. I've got a new joystick I've been meaning to setup for months now, will take me an evening at least.

Just pressing the windows button on a controller (or keyboard actually) while in game will allow you to bring up your desktop or other apps in a window you can resize and reposition (including depth position) in the cockpit.
I've only had a brief play to see it work so can't give details on how you would play a video or use a browser for example.

Edit: what I can say is that showing the desktop means that it still needs the ED mirror window to be the focus, makes it tricky to use the desktop view for watching something. I'm assuming there's a way of showing a browser directly without going through the desktop.

Just one thing for VR you want the strongest gpu you can afford so I would have bumped that gpu to a 3080 as that's about as much as I personally could afford for a gpu but if I could I would buy a 3090.

What I got is what I got ;) Believe me, if I had the king of money to throw around to get a 3090, I would have.

So far I'm very happy with the results. However, I can't get Dr. Kaii's program to work with the Epic launcher version of ED for some reason :( It tries to load, but I end up being told to register the game, which it is, and can't get anywhere. Running ED on its own is just fine, though, just can't launch through EDProfiler.

As for the Windows desktop thing, sgurr, yeah, I got it to work and stay in place, but as you pointed out, I had to have a sliver of the game window open on the side and active if I was going to control my ship at the same time. Bit awkward, not really worth doing as it is.

Question: I have 32GB of RAM at 3200mhz. But I also happen to have 16GB of RAM at 3000mhz that I could put in the machine if I wanted to. My understanding is that if I did that, I'd have 48GB of RAM, but it would all be slowed down to 3000mhz. And 32GB is overkill given that the recommended specs even in VR are 16GB I think. So I assume there is no benefit at all really in adding that RAM, am I right?

Have a look in the Windows Task Manager while the game is running to check on how much ED is using.

Naw you do not need 48gb of ram. You are better of running 32gb at better speeds/timings than downgrading it with the slower 3000mhz ram.

It's the point I was making about the gpu you don't "need" the best most top end cpu or the max amount of fastest ram you can buy however the strongest gpu you can get will never be "wasted". IE if you need to budget back on somethings it's better to budget back, within reason ofc, on the cpu and ram rather than on the gpu.

Highest I have seen my system RAM allocation get in Elite is about 8GB.
I have 32GB.

And those 8 includes the 1GB for the Oculus runtimes etc.
