New control devices on the horizon?

It seems to me we are currently in a new golden age of games which can make great use of joysticks and similar devices, titles such as this fantastic one, Elite Dangerous, along with the other one set in space, and also hugely popular online flight games war thunder and world of warplanes.

Looking at most of the peripherals people are using however, I have noticed they are all pretty old. There is a lot to be said for the "if it's not broken don't fix it" attitude but I would still like to imagine the peripheral makers are noticing an expanding market here to bring out some exciting new controllers for us to buy.

Does anyone know of any cool new hardware that is being released?

Cloud Imperium Games, the guys making Star Citizen, apparently have a manufacturer set, no names yet, for a new a space games peripherals with 6 DoF and good price range. I am personally thinking it will be either Logitech or 3Dconnexion.

Specific hardware is a venue which nowadays is very risky.

IIRC during MWO ( mechwarrior online ) alpha there was a pre-production of a mech controller. I think very few orders were made.

Another one is the Battle Beasts tank drive system. Although many aficionados play it not many invested in the "specialized" hardware.

A full HOTAS setup is investment enough and can be used in a multitude of games, especially aviation ones and all kind of "flight" sims.

Some (or likely many) may have already seen this but a guy (vid on Youtube) has made a 3D throttle control, ie it combines all six thrust movements onto one controller. Last I saw he had a plastic (3D printed) working barebones model. Very interesting to say the least.

I forget what the name was, but on the reddit elite thread there was a set up for a 3d printed throttle with 6 degrees of freedom etc. At first I thought AWESOME, and then I thought some more and realized it would be a bit of a pain to use.

In the long run its all going to depend I think on how well VR tech takes off. As an oculus user I'm really hoping it does, but I was hoping the same for 3d gaming and that never did.
