Im going to start to explain my suggestion by taking an example from star trek.
In star trek the star ships in the game do not have a canopy but a view screen. an Anaconda is almost the same size as the first Enterprise by lore.
My suggestion is, give us a canopy that consumes power and deploys armor over the glass section of the canopy while hardpoints are deployed and stows when hardpoints are stowed, but has more graphical input to show where objects are, like the view screen on the enterprise from star trek. This metal section has to be destroyed before the glass section can be reached. I think this gives a little more balance to the game as most heavy hits to the canopy instantly destroy it regardless of how much armor your ship has.
