New CV1 Rift Owner - Galaxy/System Map is driving me NUTS!

New CV1 Rift owner, loving it so far in ED. Fixed my separation and whatnot values and everything looks fine (even on a 780GTX).

Oh god, I've seen a few posts saying how the System and galaxy Maps were horrible to navigate in the Rift/Vive, but I didn't anticipate exactly how bleeding difficult they actually are.

Its awful. I can't click on anything with the mouse.

At least give us a little selection rig pointer - if it ignored the z-value in the 3D scene it'd just select whatever you moused/looked at, that'd work.

But no, its offset, or in front/behand.

I'm 6500LY out from the bubble (not too far) but for frack's sake I don't want to have to go back to 2D just to navigate correctly!!!!!1!11

Aaargh how are the rest of you coping?

I am new to the Rift too, so far I just push the rift up and type in the Name of the System i want to go to... As I can not click on anything in the map either...

Do you HOTAS?
Do you VA?

If yes, what kind?

Do you have a name for your HOTAS? (Irrelevant)

I bound the axis keys to my hotas, plus the zoom function. I used the throttle on the WH. You may need to tweak the view with your mouse a little.

Here's what I do--
-Enable the grid
-Do you know where your going or are you cruising?
-If its a mission, you should see your icon.
-Zoom in on it and you will see the stem if its above or below the grid. Use your hat switch to line it up. You will then see the dialog box you are looking for. Select and go.
-If you are exploring, I cant help you. I barely have the attention span to complete this post much less pilot my drunk butt into the middle of nowhere.
-But if you must, I would try using VA and assigning the phonetic alphabet so you can say what you wanna type. Make sense?

Uh oh, thats all for n..... Hey shiny things on my desk... must go play... Cookies....

Thanks for the answer - Yes - I have a Warthog HOTAS. I keep the grid too and all the lines. I like the company!

Hmm, maybe I'm simply not zooming in far enough to leave the map no alternative but to select the star I want.

I'm exploring, so need to point at stars ~1000LY out to generate a route etc.

Have Voice Attack (generally had little need for it as the Warthog throttle and stick have all critical functions mapped. Will give it a go using the phonetic alphabet (I did flying lessons years back, so I remember my "fife and niner"

Cool, anyone else (not drunk and distracted by shineys? :D

VR and System/Galaxy maps

Spent a few minutes setting HOTAS to navigate System and Galaxy map and its so flipping easy now I can practically do it blindfolded. And I also use voice attack to enter keys using phonetic alphabet. "Activate voice input, Amy". " Voice input activated". (Profile switched to phonetic alphabet). "Alpha bravo charlie". "Deactivate voice input" (switched back to main profile.) Pretty simple once you have it set up.

I don't have any issues with the Galaxy map in VR, the only addition I would like to see would be of an onscreen keyboard.

Allow me to quote myself from an older post about the same topic (as this always comes up again and again):
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Check the video in that post by Malic about how to work with the galaxy map in VR with HOTAS:
https://forums.frontier.co.uk/showthread.php/59809-Tips-amp-Suggestions-Galaxy-Map-with-OR/page13?p=2394144&viewfull=1#post2394144

It's quite old but still valid.

And to repeat the often mentioned rule no. 1 for using the Galaxy Map in VR: DON'T USE THE MOUSE! AT ALL! It's useless for selecting stuff in a 3D environment! Move the mouse cursor out of sight and use your Joystick / HOTAS with the circular marker to select things as shown in the linked video.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Believe me, you'll do just fine.

If you have a gamepad lying around, map the galaxy map controls to that. I have an Xbox controller on which the two analog stick control the yaw and pitch, and the X-Z coordinates of the cursor, and the shoulder buttons control zooming and Y-movement (up and down). Works perfectly in VR.

Is really easy and simple to navigate with a game pad... if you have the rift... it means you have one. There are plenty of options in the menu to configurate it as you like.

The only problem left, is how to type with the rift, hope Frontier adds some virtual keyboard in the future.

Map up, down, left, right to a hat. Map twist to your rudder controls. Map Pitch to your stick's pitch axis. Add a modifier that when pressed sets the up/down to affect the Z axis. Map zoom to a slider or something similar.

No extra controllers needed, but messing with settings is definitely required.

A while before I got my Rift I setup my HOTAS to work in the Gal Map and got used to using it. I find using the HOTAS to navigate the Gal Map easier in VR than in 2D. Just make sure you have the grid on and tilt the map so that you can see it. I find the sense of depth in VR makes it much easier to get the selection reticule over the correct system.

Typing in searches though is still a pain, especially if you wear glasses with your Rift as you can't just slip it up onto your forehead. So I'm trialling contact lenses at the moment, they make such a big difference in the ease and comfort of using the Rift and reduce the god ray glow quite a bit too, as glasses just seem to make that twice as bad.

Your head position will dictate whether you can click on something or not. Put the mouse over the star then look at your monitor. You'll see it's a little ways left or right of where you need to be. By moving your head you can get it lined up properly.

Takes practice.

Does everyone else find that the cursor (the blue circle) moves significantly slower in VR compared to when using a monitor? In the galaxy map it's not too bad but in the system map it's rather frustrating. Using a T.Flight HOTAS X. Doesn't matter if I use the stick or the hat to move the cursor, speed is the same.

Yeah I've found this too, it seems significantly slower in the system map in VR. Zooming out still helps to speed it up a bit, but it could still do with being a similar scroll speed to the standard 2D system map.

Scroll speed is KILLING me. it's so slow that even zoomed out in the system map I can't get past the snap to the planet. it just keeps snapping back. At least in the galaxy map i can zoom out so far i can break out of the snap. It's seriously nearly game breaking to not be able to use the maps because of the scroll speed. -_- I tried using the ch joystick for scroll as well as keyboard keys. Just cant scroll fast enough to use the map. argh.

edit: the thumbstick on my thruster wasn't calibrated to get the complete range on the x axis so that made it tolerable. Although it still could be a little faster in VR.

I don't want to use the game pad besides HOTAS and keyboard and mouse... ED could simply fix the star map to be usable with the mouse in VR or figure out a proper VR UX for the map. But hey, the system map is still the fugly placeholder of what was originally promised, just like almost everything else in the game feels like a prototype. I don't expect FDEV to get anything else done right in this prototype of a game any time soon. Instead they'll mess around with it for the next 8 years...

FD have had at least 772 days to work on that... I don't see it coming any time soon.

Have had more luck simply positioning my head forward and looking straight ahead. That way the view plane is flat (as it would be in 2D), but the mouse then selects whatever you do point at (or close).

Hotas/gamepad map controls worked, but aren't as intuitive as the mouse, just dragging the map around etc.

All good workarounds, but really exposes the map UI shortcomings in VR.
