New Dev Diary

Just watched this. I am sort of worried now that David mentions they have asked other investors to put money into the project. Will this turn of events now mean these investors will be able to dictate what they want in the game and will that mean the developers will start to move away from the foundations of Elite and end up making a Star Fox type game ?

Nope... it means what it said.. Like Minded people giving them more money to make the game and then pay them profit..

It can not affect the aggreement with the backers in any way and it would be a worthless investment if it damages the development and quality of the game.

Backers invest for the product... Investors invest to make money..

I see no reason to believe anything else is going on, and certainly it will only cause unnecessary concerns to think otherwise.

DB always said that ED was going to be the game HE wanted to make.... I see no reason for that to change. In addition it does sound very much like the new backers are of a similar mindset to DB which can only be a good thing.

More money for ED can only be a good thing (as long as they don´t try to make ED even more "accessible" -aka dumbed down- for the masses).

In fact I always thought the KS campaing money is quite low compared to the 10 million (20 million including investors) that Star Citizien has, not even talking about the budget of CCP for the next big EvE updates.

I hope ED can at least double the budget to 4 million or more.

The more money they use on the game. The better it will be. So I think FD welcome investors as long as they stick to David Brabens and the communities desires :)

I'm also a bit worried about this - not about investor interference, that won't happen - what I'm worried about is that now, Elite: D. needs to be profitable - profitable enough to pay back the invested money.. I am not sure that it actually will be, to be frank. Kickstarter cash had the upside of not needing to be returned later... I do hope that the deal was something reasonable and planned-for.
I mean, part of me wants to be all selfish and go "oh, as logn as theg ame comes out it's all good", but I'd hate to see the dev team disbanding after this due to not having the resources to pay back the investors.

I wouldn't mind knowing who the investors are. please don't be anything to do with EA.

I'm not worrying too much about that. If Chris Roberts (SC) is not too happy about having them around his dev.team I guess David Braben won't be too keen on them either. They're both very much in it to develop their own vision and not some money toting publishers' "good idea" on how to sell this game to the masses.

By the way: I do remember that during the Kickstarter DB already said that he had some interested investers at hand and that the KS was merely a method to prove to those investors that there is a viable group of backers to at least finance the basis of the game. Sorry, I do not know WHEN or WHERE exactly I heard this but I definately did.

the value of investments can go down as well as up so i wouldn't be too worried on that score but as it is FD are in business to make money and do have plenty of experience of making games that sell a few copies ;)

When ED is released I fully expect it to be both popular and profitable, if it captures the imagination as much as the BBC B original did i can see it being a best seller for many years to come.

ELITE was a huge smash hit in its day, not a niche hardcore thing.

Children (like me) were playing it up and down the country.

If they can capture the same magic I see no reason why it won't be very successful indeed. It's quite a big "if" though!

Just wondering if, instead of being investors, the new money is coming from benefactors....? That's a totally different proposition....

What I would say is as long as the investment was less than 50% of the money made in kickstarter, much like the stockmarket D:B can always say well you don't have any control in the game because the fans/pledgers/kickstarters have more 'shares' as it were. Im not worried really because at least David is being up front with us and telling everyone what the situation is. Besides investors and investment can mean much more features in the game maybe for example it will allow frontier to employ another 50 staff members or more to not only get the game completed on time but to add more content than would have been possible without them. We all want the best game frontier can make and you can tell so does DB I mean afterall this is the game that made him and the game everyone asks frontier to make. Like it has been said 1.7 million is a huge bargaining chip, I would like to know how much extra has been pumped into the game but I guess we'll never know that ;)
