New DK2 user, prepping for day 1

Fogging is a bit of a head scratcher. I have access to 2 ORs, work and home and the OR at work fogs quite a bit in the left lens but at home I never get fog... honestly never, not once. Maybe it's the difference in environment but being in Southern California, we have very little weather or temperature change so I don't think that's it. I think it's the fact that the work lens is much closer to my eyes... but that's just a guess. It's really the only difference between the two. If it's a real problem, you can always add a small computer fan on top on a little battery (used to do this with my paintball goggles to defog them.. works very well).

Grreetings CMDRs.

I, probably like many other people around here, have just ordered a DK2. I'm about to spend a whole lot of time reading up about getting this thing configured as good as possible.

Welcome to the fold CMDR!
Its a great experience, and well worth the $$.
.
Don't forget to order yourself some IPD adjusters from VR-Gear if your eyes are on the outskirts of 'average human' (mine are ~70mm, which is WIDE... o____O ... maybe I should change my CMRD name to Hammerhead?).

Is it feasible to just plug the Rift in the HDMI and leave the other monitors connected?
If so will I have to start disabling monitors to get more oomph from my card in OR mode?
ED only properly supports extended mode in the rift which makes the rift screen appear like an extra monitor in Windows. There is a setting in ED to specify the screen that you want to use. So the first thing you do is enable Oculus rift mode in game and then you set the screen number. while playing, the other monitors will just display your windows desktop as usual so I doubt it will affect your performance.

One thing that can go wrong with this setup is that your card may use one of your desktop monitor framerates as the upper limit for FPS in game. This is undesirable if your monitor is only 60Hz so you may need to set your monitor to a lower screen resolution in order to enable a 75Hz mode (you can try this now if you want). If ED starts supporting Direct mode in the rift then you will not have to worry about this as the rift will appear as a separate device altogether.

I think you will need to turn the settings down quite a lot, but you should be able to get the game running smoothly with the rig you already have. It's well worth it :D

Agreed, I will run it very low to start with and build up to see what I can get out of it.

I would also like any recommendations as to why my wife really really needs 2 x GTX980's for xmas. Im coming up a bit short at the mo. Either that or I get the kids 1 each..... hmmmmm.

Ha!

Honestly, don't do it... yet. Let's see what nvidia has for us with the VR drivers. You may be aces with 2x760s and that will save you a TON of money.

I want to say though, keep your expectations kinda low right now. There are a lot of strange judder issues and resolution is not great but when it works, it's crazy crazy cool. You can certainly see how VR is going to be a game changer. 100 monitors are not going to give you the same experience and this hardware is cheap for what you get imo. I certainly could not build this for 350 bucks and the phones people are using for the box version cost FAR more than that.

Day 1 is here!!!

Setup went suprisingly easily, was prepared for a weekend of troubleshooting/tweaking but it was pretty much plug and play.
I will never forget the first test room/desk thingy in the config panel. I squeeeed, laughed, then wondered were the hell my arms had gone.

Hardest thing was to get ED setup to display but thanks to these forums I'm there. Literally, THERE. Its stunning. Amazing. Incredible. But you know that already. Wow wow wow.

Yes the resolution isnt as clean as my monitor. Yes the text isnt fabulous. Yes the game doesnt have the bleeding edge resolution. Yes the galaxy map is trickier to use. I dont care. The future is now.

PS - One thing not mentioned on these forums that has made by far the biggest impact on the image quality for me is: Put ya glasses on under the Rift. I'm slightly short sighted and found that I didnt need them, or so I thought, in some of the demo panels/software but ED wasnt looking good, in the focus points in the center of vision it was fine but peripheral vision was very blurry. I put me glasses on and WOW WOW WOW.

Just a few more tweaks and Im there.
I had lowered by expectations after the above feedback. Thanks for the advice because it has exponentially increased the wow factor.

And also - my single GTX760 is performing admirably, way better than I thought it would. More than playable.

Thank you ED for giving me a refresher on childhood wonder.

Welcome to the Matrix!

My first impression was the scale. You can actually get a sense of scale.. real-world scale with the Rift. It's quite amazing. Sitting in your ship looking around at the giant space station you are in is an unbelievable, indescribable feeling.

I was worried because we had built this thing up and I didn't want you to be disappointed. It does have it's flaws but man, is it cool. You should try out other Rift demos. Some are crazy fun. I highly recommend the movie theater experience. Seems so simple yet it's super cool to watch a movie in the Rift on "the big screen". Again, the sense of scale is crazy.

Thanks Tommy.
It is incredible. But now the new shiney thing syndrome is wearing off I can get subjective again (but i still find myself waving my arms madly whilst describing the Rift ED experience).
The game is playable. Mostly. I'm still tweaking things around to get the text more readable. Its fine whilst flying but in stations/maps it's a bit too tricky.
I have just found out first hand that supersampling is named very aptly. The effects are frankly super. If I can now get rid of the horrid judder from head movements.... (not sure what fps hit Ive had as MSI Afterburner now no longer displays fps when running at this cutom resolution.

But man its ace.

Biggest wow was the 3D'ness of the cockpit virtual screens. Stunning.
And little touches like the first aid kit, the reach out and grab handles. And my prevoiusly unknown luggage behind my right shoulder (Sidey)

I'm also still not used to seeing my hands leave the flightstick to have a wiggle. Proper proper weird.

Bring on some more GPU.
In the immortal words of some actor some when - "We're gonna need a bigger boat"

Yeah man. I'm shopping for a whole new rig right now. An after-Christmas Christmas gift to myself. :p

I also use supersampling. It's all a personal choice but I really want to see the text clearly and that's the ticket. I have to set other things down to medium. Turn down your Texture Quality, Reflection Quality and Shadows. Also, try turning off your other monitors in the Nvidia settings. It's a new trick we found that will help with performance.

Hi all, my OR DK2 arrives in the UK tomorrow (ordered on Thursday). Can't wait to get the thing set up and running. New Game 0 headset and a ROG 7.1 card arrived yesterday :)

I have 2 crossfired ATI 7800s - are they going to cope?

Change your dash / GUI colour - I am using green and the text is so very much clearer than the orange.

I have 2 970s running in SLI and supersampled res of 2560*1440 - in extended mode - and it runs smooth as silk....

Nosh
