New Engineering quick fix...

Must have been mentioned elsewhere.
But - with the materials trader - then you can pretty much buy 3 grade 1 mats for a grade 2 mat.
It roughly takes 3 rolls of a grade 1 to get up to a grade 2.

Surely - adding a button at grade 1 "Boost to Grade 2" for a level 2 set of mats makes sense (or even 2 - i don't much care)..
Then - i can get to a "base" grade 5 by clicking "Boost to Grade 2","Boost to Grade 3" (using 1 grade 3 set of mats), "Boost to Grade 4", "Boost to Grade 5" = 4 clicks, rather than 16-20..

You can take it one step further - and just take 2 sets of grade 5 mats to boost straight to there..

That's a lot less clicking - same number of mats (pretty much)

Have you ever tried to buy PP materials?

Optimising stuff isn't exactly high on FDev's to-do list. :p

*EDIT*

Should say, excellent, efficient, idea though. [up]

The developers would like players to work their way gradually through the tier of upgrades.

But that's not what's going to happen. Players will gather all the material to get to the end of Grade 5 then go get the upgrade they actually want in one long, tedious sequence of rolls for lesser upgrades they will never use, speculating loudly and bitterly about the marital status of the developers' parents while doing so.

To avoid this, yes, set a material cost to access each grade equivalent to the cost of the pointless rolls to needed to gain unwanted lesser grades, and spare the players the tedium of the repetitive upgrade process.

I also wonder if you can downgrade Grade 5 mats to more grade 4? Maybe if 4 - 5 was 6 x4 to get 1 x5, teh downfgrade is 1x 5 = 5 x 4? So there is a loss, but not significant?

That would also help?

They showed that on stream.

You get 1x G2 for 6x g1 mats, and you get 3x G1 mats for 1x G2 mat.

It's a nice sentiment but Sandro obviously has no idea of what gamers are like.

Geez, the fact that people are prepared to collect thousands of mat's just to get a single god-roll on one module should tell you all you need to know about how people are going to approach the new system.

The only way there's ever going to be "progression" is if the engineers arbitrarily refuse to do more than one mod' for you per week.
And, i find myself hoping nobody from FDev reads that and considers it seriously.

According to the stream, downgrading a mat' gets you 3 of the lower class.

I'd be willing to spend the entire sum of progressive materials to start upgrading at G5 rather than what we've currently got.

"Progressive"... it's a funny word.. usually it means 'making advancement', except in politics, where it generally means 'taking from those who have and giving to those who don't want to work for', or in Elite where it means 'working even harder for'.
