Just in case people have missed the bandwagon, mining is now pretty awesome. Reason I say that here is because it's awesome for explorers too (it always has been, but now at least the mining aspect itself is good).
Local space is packed with tens of thousands of systems which explorers usually ignore for various reasons including wanting to go far, wanting to find unfound stuff, wanting to make money etc.
Well, if a part of you always regretted that it's pretty time wasting to explore local space, you now have an excuse.
One part of mining involves finding rings with pristine reserves. There are a lot already revealed in local space so you can just explore the map and find one, or you could even go to all of those systems where the system data is unavailable and try and find pristine reserves there. That's exploring, through and through. Then you can settle on one you find particularly interesting/pretty, spend a while mining there, and then move on to another. And it isn't time wasting because you get to make a fair profit now doing it.
It's also good because
a) it breaks the routine of exploring, giving you good reason to stop in systems and try something different and a bit more challenging
b) you have more ship choices as jump range is less important
For all those that never even considered mining (like me) or never considered that it could actually be fun (like me), feel free to check my thread linked in the first sentence of this post, where I try and explain why it's actually and unexpectedly really fun
