New explorer here! Need help understanding exploration rewards! Please and thank you

Hi guys

I've been playing ED for a long time focusing on combat and trading. I'm finally planning my first long-distance voyage into the galaxy! It's mostly for fun, but I'm wondering whether or not to spend any time on discovery scans and/or detailed surface scans.

I have a few questions.

What is the credit reward for the simple "discovery" of astronomical bodies through the use of the discovery scanner? Also, is this reward a flat basic-discovery reward for each mass discovered or does it increase or decrease depending on the type of body discovered?

Thirdly, I understand that scanning each body offers a much larger reward, and that the reward is doubled when using a detailed surface scanner. And then another 50% bonus is added for being the first commander to scan it. So, I want to know if I'm calculating this correctly. Below is a a part of a table taken from the wikia. Say I find a scan a black hole valued at 50,000 cr. Then X2 for using the detailed surface scanner gives me 100,000cr. Then if I'm the first, I get a bonus 50%, so 150,000? Is that correct? Thanks for your help guys!

BodyApprox Value
Stars
Class O, B, A, F, G, K, M, L, T, Y2,900 - 7,900 CR
Black Hole46,000 - 60,000 CR

Hi, I'd suggest reading Nutter's guide (to the galaxy), https://forums.frontier.co.uk/showthread.php?t=81653&highlight=nutter

You will receive a small payment for just 'honking' the system, although to get the best reward you need to perform a detailed surface scan. A black hole or neutron star, if you are the first to discover it will net you about 60k cr.

Hope this helps, I am currently about 20k out, on my way back from the outer edge. There are huge fields of neutron stars as you reach the central core, these are excellent for 'farming' credits - but I would strongly suggest you pursue exploration for the sake of curiosity rather than money, as the payout per hour is dismal compared to trading. There are some beautiful sights out here.

Enjoy and have fun.

Remember also that you don't get a fist discovered tag unless you detail scan it.

I did my first exploration -test- flight to T Tauri. It is quite near, and still a nebulae, so the visual reward is good for the purpose. Doing as much as I can to calculate damage/repair stuff before I go any further. On my way there I have found a couple of systems with unscanned objects (avoid the fastest path to go there, use it on the way back).

There is pretty much everything (except black holes) you will find at 2k+ Ly but close enough to call it an 'experiment'.

Hi, I'd suggest reading Nutter's guide (to the galaxy), https://forums.frontier.co.uk/showth...ghlight=nutter
I can only highly suggest to read Nutter's guide, too. But I want to add some of my own:
  • The amount paid for a scanned planet or star depends on the planets or stars mass. The heavier, the better the pay.
  • Among Gas Giants Class I is a bit more valuable and Class II is much more valuable than the rest.
  • The higher the mass of the main star, the higher the mass that can be bound gravitationally. Use the star map function to show the star type, and aim for O, B, A, F and G class stars. In that order. Especially O, B and A class stars sometimes have valuable neutron stars and black holes as secondary stars.
  • Avoid to land on a planet, especially those with high gravity. More than one commander has lost weeks worth of exploration data due to some accident. And it seems, that the planetsides far from the bubble don't differ much from the closer ones.

Remember also that you don't get a fist discovered tag unless you detail scan it.

A small clarification to this. You have to do a surface scan to get first discovered tag. But you don't need a detailed surface scanner to get first discovery, any discovery scanner (basic, intermediate or advanced) will do to get first discovery as long as you travel close to the star/planet and keep scanning it until you do a basic surface scan. As mentioned if you have a detailed surface scanner you will get twice the credits though so it is very recommended to equip a detailed surface scanner as soon as you can afford one.

Say I find a scan a black hole valued at 50,000 cr. Then X2 for using the detailed surface scanner gives me 100,000cr. Then if I'm the first, I get a bonus 50%, so 150,000? Is that correct?
The principle/calculation is correct although the actual values in your example are probably not correct.
