New explorer mission idea

Despite the popularity of exploring and the rewards, I have a suggestion for a new mission. How about missions from, say, the Federal/Imperial Scientific Research Department to collect some specific commodities, followed by a mission to test a new FSD, which, when you do, transports you to a random area somewhere in the galaxy and you have a determined amount of time to return to complete the mission? Some sort of safeguard built in that would bring you back to the station that gave you the mission if you fail miserably, or run out of time, but with a substantial reward based on distance travelled if you make it back in time?

I'd like to actually be able to discover things other than stellar bodies...
Thargoids, alien artefacts, Elvis and of course ... The restaurant at the end of the universe.

I was thinking quite simple, make the mission do-able without having to random USS.
