New explorer with couple questions

Imho, and only my opinion, heatsinks are unnecessary.
(unless you have spare slots doing absolutely nothing)

If you enter a bi/tri system, and still in SC, then high tail it out and if you have module damage then use you AFMU to fix them.
If you enter a bi/tri system and your ship does an E-stop, when restarting your warp engines :D , do NOT go into HS, go in to SC and you will not take damage(as SC spools up much much quicker than HS) so you heat up less.

p.s. 3 deep space trips and no deaths yet.

What else is an explorer going to put on a utility mount? Maybe shield boosters, I suppose...

I think you can take spare utility mounts pretty much as read on an exploration build though.

One of the things that I really enjoy about exploration is the pure variety of things you can do.. I think we all do things slightly differently.
One of my personal goals (and I am keeping count myself as currently the system does not let you know) is how many objects that I have my name on as the first discoverer - nearly 20,000 for me at the moment and heading in with a load more. So depending where I am and what I am doing - I either scan the complete system or cherry pick or indeed if like I am currently 'travelling home' I just scoop and hoot. Once I get close I will probably stop and land to see what I can get and take some photos - as long as my hull is ok... priority is the data I am carrying...

but it is up to YOU commander.
Enjoy

*Shocked disbelieving noise* How dare you insult the Asp!

Gotta say, I'm with the OP on this. I kvetch about the look of the Asp all the time, and I am flying one right now.

To the OP, a lot of good advice, but I'll throw in my $.05 that the primary function is to have fun.

If you have Horizons, the afore mentioned SRV excursions are great, just remember to check the gravity of your target. Nothing makes a greater killjoy than crashing on a 2.6G world because you thought you knew what you were doing.

If you don't have Horizons and/or you are not on a time sensitive objective like the DW expedition, take a little time now and again to play something else. Space madness can put you off the game, but having specific objectives and something that removes you, albeit temporarily, from the Elite mindset will keep it at bay.

Edit: White dwarfs, neutron stars, presumably black holes, although I have not encountered any personally, require IMMEDIATE stop on system entry if you do not want a crash deceleration. Keep ready to zero out your throttle, although throttle management is important in any event when entering a new system.
