New facility listed on System Map, anyone know what it is?

A new starport facility called SERVICES has appeared on the System map, does anyone know what it refers to?

It's not Search and Rescue overflowing on to the next line, it's a line on it's own.

Whatever it is, it is not disabled when the starport is damaged:

They’re Services. Provided by the Intergalactic Service Workers Union.

If you’re still left wondering, well... Either you’re not old enough to know, too old to remember, or you need to see your doctor for a prescription for some little blue Performance Enhancers.

Please ignore all the funny responses. These guys are just kidding you.

Seriously, the Services are those guys who refuel your ship in an instant, repair your ship in an instant, remove and load cargo from your ship in an instant, buff out all that damage taken from that fight you just escaped from in an instant. If you blink you'll miss seeing them. Why they can even repair that huge hole in your canopy and you'll never see them do it because they can do this all ..... in an instant.

You never see them in or around the station but they're in there. They do all these services so fast because it has to be done in an instant. They're the Service guys. They work instantly. In your instance.

Don't forget to tip.

I thought it was an old carryover from days long gone by that has never been removed.

Services as in the 'horizontal market' (wherever horizontal might be in space) or are you referring to services as the Italian gentlemen offering you fire insurances?

Forgive me if I’m wrong but, are you saying all that instant stuff as a way of implying that you believe that there should be some kind of timegate for repairs and refueling?

No, that's not what is being said, though there are some who would insist these would be Good Things.

I don't entirely disagree. If refueling something like a Beluga took 2-3 minutes from empty (that's a 128 ton fuel tank), I'd be alright with that. If nothing else, it gives any of us 2-3 minutes to stand up, move around and prevent deep vein thrombosis. No doctor out there would say it's a bad thing to get up and move around once in a while.

Repairs... I could be swayed easily to either side. There is one part of me that says extensive repairs of a star ship should be time-consuming. The game allows us to have many ships, and I am one of those who does have many ships.

71 ships to be exact. I didn't even realize how many I had. Nice new feature.

If I had to park a badly damaged ship for an hour, or even a day or three, I wouldn't be terribly put out by this. On the other hand, I can see how this could be severely detrimental to new commanders, or commanders with few or no alternate ships, having to wait. I suppose the most happy medium would be to split the difference - pay your rebuy cost to fully repair your ship right now and go back to whatever you were doing to damage it so badly, or pair the regular repair cost and wait. Wait time would be different for each ship. Small ships might take 10-30 minutes, medium ships 30 minutes to a day, large ships 1-3 days, depending on the amount of damage (basing this on 1% hull and 1% module heath). Obviously less damage could be repaired in much less time.

But I'm not calling for any changes - just that I wouldn't object to them, as long as they were reasonable and still allowed for rush work, for those with either no patience or no time. I get that some people only get 15 minutes a week to play - I've heard them go on about it for years around here. I get it. I also get some people simply cannot wait, and even instant is too slow for them.

The rest of us, well... we manage.

More along the lines of what IndigoWyrd said, but long story short, no, I'm not saying that there should be a time gate.

The observation was that we never see anyone walking around the stations but that things that we request happen in an instant. Conclusion: It's being done by those guys you can't see because they move so fast they're invisible to our eyes. Sort of like that episode on Star Trek TOS called "Wink of An Eye"
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wink_of_an_Eye

That said, as IndigoWyrd mentioned refuling, I'd like to note that I play Train Simulator 2018 and once in a while I have to take the engine to the fuel depot and put some gas in the tank.

It takes a few minutes; probably not as long as it REALLY takes, but that's immersion for you.

Once in a while I have to take a bunch of hoppers to a factory and load them up with wood chips or coal.

Again, it takes a few minutes; probably not as long as it REALLY takes, but that's immersion for you.
AND I have to move each empty car forward as the one before it fills up. One by one. But that's immersion.

I could live with that sort of thing to some extent in ED, but I like refueling in an instant, as well as instant cargo load / unload, instant repair. I realize it's NOT realistic that a hull that's at 2% could be repaired in 1 second, but it's a game, after all.

When we can have a scoot about a station I think it would be interesting to have to wait for repairs and refueling etc ,it would be pretty funny if the station you docked at ground crew said they didn't have a such an such a part and it would take so many minutes to have it delivered.

So you nip down the pub etc and wait it out maybe catch some exotic std from some alien skank pfft.

Instant repairs/repaint/refuelling: nanobots. Same littel critters that are inside the AMFUs, except there's a lot more of 'em at a spacedock so they get the job done even quicker than an AMFU.

As for the OP: the only thing I can think of is this: you know how, when you land at a station, the little menu pops up with three options: "Launch", "Enter Hangar" and "Station services". I assume that it's those "Services" that are what that's about. One can conceive of a station that's so badly damaged (or in quarantine, or whatever) that the only thing it will let you do after landing, is launch again, with no access to any station services at all.
