What about a fighter with wake scanner and warrant scanner to replace them in your utilities. Either via a new ship type or the ability to swap the current one with other utilities. If it gains the wake scanner it should be able to travel with you in flight or it can manage to dock with you in hop and use your FTL wake to go with you until it auto docks in warp. There should be one for each defence, scanner, and experimental utility. they could be great accompaniment for various types of tasks. I would love a warrant scanner on a fighter so I can have full shields. And maybe one with a wake scanner for following targets. I would keep a double bay with one of each so I can carry out both tasks at maximum shields.
They could also make utility fighters for miners or for the other items that have one internal slot like limpets for prospecting/collecting and mining lasers. Or weapons and hatch breakers or repair limpets for rep setups. A miner could use an infinite set of limpets on a fighter and some extra mining lasers. So could anyone with repair limpets. Even if they are weaker ones.
Maybe they could make speclized fighters/utility drones that have customizable slots and come with special equipment like cyto's. But you can only get them from the place you get those weapons. Then you can either get utility drones with a utility item or normal fighters with any of the scanner. There would be a lot more fighter customization then. A utility drone with prospector or collector limpet and two mining lances would be pretty nice for a miner.
Then if they ever come out with bigger ships and the ability to use multiple fighters you can make a mining machine with all drones one day. Maybe the fleet carrier can do this and launch a bunch of fighters to do mining and collecting then. Or it can partially do the work with a bunch of other fighters/players on top of this for very efficient large scale mining for gather resources and making money for the fleet. It could be cool to auto divy out pay at the end to everyone invovled like in Eve. I haven't done mining like that in ages. I think I got a hulk at one point but then lost it.
