Proposal Discussion New future ships (DLC)

I wonder....

I would like to see adverts for "New" ships before they come out plastered around space stations and space lanes.

so, imagine if in 6 months time there was going to be a ship DLC pack and oen of those ships would be a brand new Cobra MK IV

I would like some subtle marketing adds, ie a picture of a snake (cobra) with IV written over it

As we get closer to the launch date the adds could change with images of small parts of the ship, building up to full blown adds when the DLC drops.

then....

these new ships should NOT just pop up everywhere in game, I would expect them to be very rare with them becoming a little more common over the following months. If you want to buy one in game there should be a few months waiting list (real time) whilst your ship is built.

I would like to see the ships build at a specific factory (infact I would like there to be factories for all the ship builders where you can see them being constructed) in different systems, and be able to do transport missions ferrying construction parts to the factory - perhaps doing these missions would allow you to get a premium position in the queue for ordering a new ship.

If the day a DLC suddenly drops, the universe is magically populated with loads of the new ships, I would find it immersion breaking. Also simply being able to buy a ship on launch day would be unrealistic. A mate of mine was on a 12 month waiting list to buy his new car (this is extreme, but a few months is quite normal for a new model)

any thoughts?

thanks for reading

I really don't like the idea having to wait for them. I don't know if there will be DLC ships, but if I buy something with real money, I expect to be able to use it pretty much straight away. Having to wait for it to download will be long enough for me. ;-)

I quite like the idea of them being limited to certain places though, within reason. Like you have to travel to the large industrial systems to purchase them. Or perhaps you could order one, and then it would be delivered in maybe twice as long as the time it takes to jump from the major industrial worlds to your current location.

So if you want it straight away you have to go yourself, other wise wait for it to be delivered to you local dealer. ;-)

I don't think ad billboards in space make any sense whatsoever. You'd not be able to read them from far away, and when you are close enough, chances are you are not oriented the same as the billboard and have to look at it upside down, from odd angles or even edge on.

Inside space stations, however, yeah that would fit.

My opinion is that in order to avoid breaking immersion and allow people to still have access to new content right away, we could preorder a ship say a month in advance of any DLC or expansion. So that when it becomes available we have been expecting it all along.

I don't like the idea of Elite becoming driven by microtransactions. Dropping out a new ship every now and again isn't really going to increase the game's longevity much. I'd rather effort be focused on real expansions to gameplay like EVA or planetary landing instead of low-effort content with limited appeal.

As long as i get my character a Zero G Trenchcoat id be happy

I've seen other posts about advertising billboards in stations and I think they would be a good idea as long as they remained anchored in the context of the game. No real life advertising.
As for new ship designs, I rather like the idea of earning them through a mission prior to general galactic release. If I'm honest though, the real issue is the equipment ships can carry. I think that will be the main area of interest in terms of development. After all, the ship is nothing more than the container for the real brains and brawn and FD seem to be developing mass types, or classes, of ships that cater to career functionality.
I can't really see how a new ship design would fundamentally enhance it's performance over similar ships in the same mass group. Maybe aerodynamics could be improved, or trade offs over shape. Equipment should improve though.
Just my thoughts about what makes a ship great (or not); the equipment and the commander using it. :)

I would like to see new ships, for those that want to buy them it's one of the few things that wont unbalance the game, you could have 500 different types of ships if they all shared similar stats and it wouldn't hurt anything but would give you a chance to be an individual, after all your Ford Mondeo and your BMW 3 series are not much different in real terms but both have their fans.

I would like to see much improved ship equipment available, would love to be able to kit out an Anaconda with 5 times as many thrusters so that It could turn like a viper for instance, ok you wouldn't have hardly any cargo space left, but it would be fun to be able to use it like Millenium Falcon was used. temperamental and unreliable without much room inside, but fast.

Having ships show up first at a certain shipyard and then spread out slowly would be perfect. This would fit how ship-type distribution worked in FE2. If you start at Ross 154, you'll likely find Constrictors, Pumas and Tigers for sale, but if you want to buy a Cobra, you have to head out away from the core worlds, and of course the Imperial ships are found most in their territories.

Same is true for best equipment upgrades also.

How long before some entrepreneur develops spamdrones - cheap automated probes that are designed to lock on to any passing ships, home in on the cockpit and match velocity, then project holoadverts directly in your face? :D

I'd honestly only like to see ships released as 'DLC Expansions' if they are brand new to Elite as a whole. I'd rather have all the 'classic' Elite ships in the game as they're finished with the only price needed being in-game currency as opposed to real money.

Hi. Thanks for your thoughts. Just for a the record at no point did I mean micro transactions for a ship. I meant a waiting. List in in game currency which u could perhaps speed up with missions
