New guy needs a hand VR Questions

As a player who started with his sidey in Open, and still flies a Hauler in open 18 months later: please keep any 'open is evil' propaganda to the Open vs Solo topic... :(
Respectfully, I don't consider it "propaganda", just reasonable advice to a newbie. It sounds like your experiences in Open are very different from mine. I've been killed for no reason in open (given no opportunity to drop cargo, by commanders who don't fight fair) and lost millions in credits as a result.

I almost quit the game because of this, but now I never play in Open.

So getting me past the whole "Jump" issue had this effect last night;
- Ran missions up till I hit 21K
- Bought some module upgrades
- Ran missions again till I hit 25K
- Bought a couple more upgrades.
- Decided to squeeze 2 more missions in before bed. Both missions started as <5K each and turned into 25K each (mid mission) so ended that with 53K in my pocket
- Bought some more upgrades.

So thanks to everyone for that. I think I'm off to a good start. I just have to tweak my fuel scooping so I don't smoke up he cabin so much :) .

Started looking at new ships and wondering what I'm going to do with all my shiny new modules.
I'm thinking Adder. I'm also thinking of all the new modules I've bought. I've read internal modules can be replaced with cheaper ones and bought back but it seems to me to be a fairly easy process to mess up, selling out all the internal modules from one ship, trading it in for the new ship and then buy the old modules back. From what i read it sounds like it should be pretty easy to lose all of your modules. Have I got this right?

It is on.. odd
Cmdr Blain Crighton then

Hey Vasious, thanks! Sounds like a lot of fun!
I've copied and saved your sig and I'll try to sort out how I add that in. That upper panel and I aren't getting along just yet so its a challenge accessing the menu. The other menus are fully accessible just by looking at them for me.

Yes, if you get disconnected from the server during the rebuy process, you will lose your recently-sold modules. The safe way to do this is to store any modules you wish to reuse, buying the cheapest replacements (or leave an optional slot empty), sell your old ship, buy the new ship, and equip it using the stored modules.

The Adder is a good choice. I used the sidewinder and saved my credits until I could buy a well-equipped new ship (a Viper). Make sure you have enough funds in reserve for at least 2 rebuys and possibly to buy some cargo too. After you've gained more funds, you should consider getting a Cobra; I really liked mine a lot. I currently have both an Asp Explorer and a Python. At some point, I'll probably get an Anaconda, but I like being able to land on medium (not large) pads, which increases the missions I can accept.

Most of your questions were answered already but for the VR ones, I suggest you make a post in the separate VR forum.

Galaxy map works brilliantly on a normal monitor with a mouse, but unfortunately it has never worked well in VR - FD are aware of that but I don't think they've found a good way to fix it yet. As others have suggested, you may find it's better to bind the galaxy map controls to a HOTAS and use it that way.

NW3: Thank you so much! That was exactly what I was after, the transition of parts and how to do that cleanly. Your solution sounds perfect and more stable.

Javert: Yes, sorry for posting in the general discussions forum. You won't believe this but I did look through the list of forums to find one suitable for the topic but I was targeting a forum for newbies, from my perspective there is only a VR version.. or was, so it never dawned on me to look for a separate VR.

Since you are echoing what SO many have already said in this thread and your a moderator to boot, why not just move it to that discussion area. I certainly wouldn't mind and it would avoid all the representative correction "pile on" :)

Do all the training missions first - this will give you some practice, including docking/take off and travel from system to system etc.

Best way to use the system and galaxy maps in VR is to map some controls to move left/right/forward/back and zoom in/out - that way you can make large movements with the mouse as per 2D, but then zoom in and select the star you really want by centring its little blue shadow (on the grid plane) in the blue selection circle.

Once you get the hang of it, its not too bad. The same controls work in the system map too. Zooming out in the system map helps with speed.

Do a search in the VR forum for "Galaxy Map" - there are a lot of threads on this very subject.
