New guy - Trying to get my HOTAS set up

Hey all - New player here. After hemming and hawing over E:D for the last couple of years, I have decided to try it out. I have a brand new TM16000M flight stick and a TWCS throttle and the game doesn't either item. In the control configurator, all it sees are KBM. Any ideas? Other games (House of the Dying Sun, Star Citizen, etc) have no problems recognizing the inputs. Any help is appreciated.

If you are playing through steam, then I think there's some kind of setting (in steam) that essentially hides ED's pre-configured bindings. Not sure exactly, as I don't use steam. But those other binds (icluding one for the T16000M Hotas) files should indeed be there, and if you change that steam setting then they will be there in the drop down list at the top of Options > Controls.

Sorry I can't be more specific, as I don't use steam, but this situation has come up before, and hope this helps.

I've just solved this.

The default configuration under Steam is to use Steam in Big Picture mode to supply the controller. If Steam is not in Big Picture mode, ED doesn't see any controllers. Not only is it a pain to go into Big Picture mode every time, but I think Steam only recognises a gamepad. You have to remap the joystick as if it is a gamepad and then map it back in ED. It does silly things like the throttle controls the selection of options when you are docked.

So after a frustrating couple of days, I've just written a HowTo on telling Steam to mind its own business and let ED handle the controller mapping.

Thanks, guys!

Soron - I followed your link and instructions and got it fixed. The only file in that folder was called StartPreset.start, so I just created a new file called “Joystick Steam.bindings”, per your naming suggestion. Restarted ED and lo and behold, the TM HOTAS setup was listed. I didn’t even have to rebind, but I am going through the routine of customizing. Now I can play through the tutorials at least. :D

No problem. I don't think you had got as far along as I have. I've had to set conmtrollers up before for other Steam games. So I got a game-pad working on ED. When you configure bindings in ED it creates the Custom.binds file. If you haven't got even that far yet then that file won't be there and you don't need to save it.
