Newcomer / Intro New guy with a question.

Hey, just started playing ED last week and have been loving the game. Even pulled a friend into it so we can fly as a wing. One issue I've had is that a couple/three/four times a night (I play for 2 or 3 hours) as I am in hyperspace between systems I'll lose the server and have to reenter the game. I checked it on my end, and I'm not losing my connection, so I think it must be in the game. Is this a normal phenomenon? I don't mind too much if it is, because it doesn't seem to set you back too far when it happens, but I'm just curious. Also, are there any workarounds?

Thanks! Hope to see you out there.

The servers are a bit itchy lately, although I hardly ever lose my connection.
FD have been working hard to cope with the influx of a large amount new players after gamescom.
Normally everything runs very stable and smooth.

Unfortunately I can't agree with the positive attitude of Iskariot. I think the single worst problem of this game was the decision to go for a P2P infrastucture. It's one of the cases of "you get what you pay for" and Frontier decided to cut costs here.
.
What you can try is to form a private group, where only you and your friends play. See how the game performs. You might be lucky, and you might be in bad luck. There a lot of factors in that, among those which ISPs you use, which kind of connection you have and many more things. I could write an essay on this, without getting to a final result, so I rather skip this. The point really is: try things around a bit with your friends.
.
Unfortunately if things still are a problem, there's not much you can do about it. Also, raging about it by now is way too late. The netcode usually is such a basic part of a games design that tearing it out and replacing it with something reasonable would require a massive rework of the game, which we won't ever see.

The other thing: do your disconnects also happen when you play solo? That's what I usually switch to when things get wonky. Once I switch to solo, the game runs without problems for hours...

As Iskariot says, the servers can be a bit fragile at times, Sunday evening (UK time) is becoming a bit regular. There is also a regular server-update every Thursday morning (UK time).

There is also a long-running issue that some people are experiencing (I was until recently changing my hub) where they keep getting the "Could not connect to transaction server" error message, usually when docking or transitioning. F Dev support put up a work-around that I found worked perfectly, it is basically changing your computer's internet settings to reduce the maximum size of the data packets. If you are suffering from this you might want to try what is explained in F Dev's post here:

Good luck, welcome and enjoy yourself.

I noticed it many times, before. When a new major update is closing in and devs are busy with either the beta or the launch preparations, the live servers are probably neglected a little bit.

So to answer your question, no, it's not normal. Usually it's pretty smooth, but in the past few days I also encountered some issues. I haven't been booted out, but sometimes I do notice hyperjump taking a bit too long or galaxy map refusing to load.
I can imagine that if you live further away from the servers, these small hiccups can chain-react and cause a soft lock, or log-out to menu.

If these problems persist after 2.2 goes live, you could contact the support, I guess.

Edit: ninja'd big time.

There are a few other things you can check:
  • While playing the game also play some music from a streaming site. If the music stream also stops when you lose connection then most likely the problem is on your side or the ISP. If that does occur and you are on Wifi it could be interference from other devices in your household/neignbours who are using the same Wifi channel.
  • Run a Netalyzr report, which is now one of the many recommended actions on the Frontier support note: Connectivity Troubleshooting Steps
  • Another is to check the path to the game servers by running a traceroute.
When you connect to a website – say, howtogeek.com – the traffic has to go through several intermediaries before reaching the website. The traffic goes through your local router, your Internet service provider’s routers, onto larger networks, and so on.

Traceroute shows us the path traffic takes to reach the website. It also displays the delays that occur at each stop. If you’re having issues reaching a website and that website is working properly, it’s possible there’s a problem somewhere on the path between your computer and the website’s servers. Traceroute would show you where that problem is.
More info on interpreting the results: http://www.howtogeek.com/134132/how-to-use-traceroute-to-identify-network-problems/

Or open a ticket and attach a Netlog as detailed at the end of Connectivity Troubleshooting Steps .
At the LaveCon meet/conference it was mentioned by the Devs that Netlogs can be particularly helpful to identify the source of the problem.

Thanks to everyone who replied to this thread. I'm going to wait it out and see if these issues persist. As I said, I don't really find it to be a huge issue, as it doesn't happen super often. The message I usually get says something about the matchmaking server. And I only get booted when I am in hyperspace, never while docking or landing.

It just became an issue last night because my friend was out of fuel and stranded and I was trying to get to him with fuel limpets before his oxygen ran out. Unfortunately I got dc'ed and he died out there, cold and alone and now I am wracked with guilt <sob>.

First, let me welcome you to the Elite: Dangerous Galaxy. My rule 2 is; Have Fun (it is just a game, but WHAT a GAME!).

The learning curve is so steep that the mountain goats go around in teams, roped together (and even then they may fall off, but that means the Vultures get to eat!). However, when you master something, and do it well, the buzz is worth the effort.

Now, Rule 1, which is; Never Fly if you cannot cover the REBUY. REBUY is the insurance excess on your ship, and is 5% of the value of your ship (including all upgrades, but not the cargo). If you get killed, and you can cover the REBUY, you will get a replacement ship identical to the one you lost. However, if you cannot cover the REBUY you may well end up back in a basic Sidewinder. Please do not let this happen to you, as the forum is littered with tales of woe when other Players have ignored Rule 1, and then got killed.

When you decide to buy a new ship, try to have 200% of the purchase price first. That way you have enough for the ship, some basic outfitting, a couple of loads of cargo, and a couple of REBUYs (just in case). If you are trading in a ship, take it back to factory spec first. When you sell any ship you will always take a 10% hit on the value of the ship at the time of selling. However, if you take it back to factory spec first you get back the full amount that you paid for the upgrades (at this time, at least). Then, when you sell the ship, your losses will be reduced. For example, I have an A Rated Cobra MkIII worth 10Mcr. If I were to sell her now I would take a loss of 1Mcr. However, if I take her back to factory spec and then sell her my loss will be about 35Kcr.

Have fun, fly safely, and see you out amongst the stars. Feel free to ask any questions, we all had to learn somewhere, and those that care will answer all they can.

With reference to your friend running out of fuel (and your unfortunate disconnect), the Fuel Rats will definitely help (they are now well over 10,000 rescues). If it happens to any of your friends again, agree a time when you will both be able to play (and determine the system where they are). Then head to that system (making sure YOU have enough fuel to get there and back, as well as enough fuel limpets to effect a successful rescue), making sure to be there at the agreed time. When they come back on line, wing up, get them to trigger the Wing Beacon, and head in.
