In all probability something like that has been used ever since they retired the SR71.

@amigacookie like the SR71 the purpose of the SR72 is spying.

Satellites have limitations such as following predictable orbits that allow whoever you're spying on to hide things when the satellite is overhead. Another point is that if situations develop in somewhere that you hadn't covered with a satellite , it takes time to either launch a new satellite or re-task an existing satellite to cover that area. Changing the orbit of a satellite to re-task it severely reduces it's life span as you use up propellant that is normally used to keep it stable.

Using an aircraft such as the SR72 you can have some idea of what is happening in a few hours rather than days. This gives people almost real time knowledge of the situation on the ground.

haha love it :) I'd rep you +1 for that but I know that would make you sad.

Lets just hope the scientists working on the Lockheed project weren't seconded over from NASA's ill fated Mars Climate Orbiter ;)
