Hardware & Technical New i7 build

Got a 6850k for Chrimble, and some goodies for the new build have started to arrive.

Asus X99 AII motherboard and a lovely Samsung 950 M2 512Gb ssd :)

I'm looking over the RAM compatibility list and having some problems deciding on wether to go with 64Gb RAM just now, or wait a bit and plop the whole 128Gb at once when compatible kits become more available.

I'll transfer the old Titan X from this rig once it's ready - should be a fun little project :D

Hmm... 128GB RAM.

*spins an Elite cartridge in the palm, sheepishly*

What's RAM?

He worked for a big insurance company and got derezzed ;)

It's a bit silly though - about 10 years ago I was well chuffed with a 233MHz Pentium 2 and 128 Megabytes of the stuff :D

I am still scratching my head at why Asus require a CPU installation "tool" in order for the socket to work?

No interest, 2017 will be the year of the PS4 for ED

:D

I don't put much stock in QVLs, but I'd recommend holding off on the full. 128GiB.

DDR4 prices are still pretty inflated, and unless you have a pressing need for the whole amount now, you'll save money if you wait a bit. Then again, if you are going to be overclocking the CPU or the memory, filling it all now will make it easier to settle on permanent settings, as you won't have to do all your testing and tuning again later.

The whole 128Gb would have been lovely for handling the ridiculous numbers of VM's that, ironically, I no longer need to handle :D

I do love my RAMdrives though - and after too many years of running machines with far too many hard drives and accumulating far too much junk - having one with just the single SSD and RAMdrive image will mean backups no longer take weeks :D

I just built an i6770k on an Asus board this week too. 32Gb DDR4 seems enough for now I think. I didnt see the cpu tool until I was packing the bits up - not really needed as the chip will only fit one way. I assume you have a separate cooler? The oc (k) chips don't seem to come with a stock cooler. I have an older Arctic Freezer 13 on mine which keeps it around 70C in ED without overclocking, but I might replace it and upgrade some of the other cooling now I have some new numbers to chase!

Cooler will be decided on once the GF chooses a case that's suitable for the living room lol

And I've just double checked what year it is lol - that P2 was nearly twenty years ago :D

Well, she's built and ready to go :)

With the exception of the SSD - which for some inexplicable reason is no longer a valid boot device after updating the SSD firmware and the motherboard uefi. The supplier also doesn't have any stock left of the 950 Pro - so they say they are sending me a 960 Pro instead.

Damn, that's a nice kit. Go for 128 - shouldn't be long. May as well go the whole hog. I expect X99 to have good lasting value, it's a sensational chipset.

You just need a 1080Ti...

*patiently waiting for his warranty replacement 6600K to arrive...

From memory, you can actually plug a HOTAS in with a PS4 (even if just a HOTAS X), this alone puts it head and shoulders above XBOne. Kinda a shame M$ are so hard headed.

Anyway, until I can plug in a Warthog, and my *being ordered right now* BRD F3 pedals... I'll stay with my PC.

Having said that, a PS4/XBOne would be a cool way to play when away from my gaming rig (which is often), and probably cheaper than doubling up (which is what I currently am in the process of...).

Clarification, I live in 2 countries, a month in each at a time.

Go for 128

Yeah I decided to just fill it with 128Gb of 3000MHz DDR4 - plan is to run nearly everything from a 64Gb RAMdrive and just dump the state to SSD. It's running fine from a Linux live USB - I'm still a bit in surprise from seeing my first ever Samsung SSD completely die.

Odd things happen. My i5 6600K died 3 days after installing it into the brand new Asus Gene VIII. Transplanted the GTX1080 G1 Gaming (also brand new) into my old trust 4690K/Asus Ranger build, and the fans on it died a few hours later. Was interesting watching my frame rate go from 90 fps (in VR) to less than 1FPS, and me scratching my head until I started checking temps...

Who has two pieces of brand new equipment die within 24hrs of each other?

Anyways, that is an evil system you have there, I couldn't stretch to the X99 platform without sacrificing the GTX1080. I can only imagine how fast things happen on that thing...

I'm currently playing with the idea of setting up an SSD based NAS, simply to get rid of spin up times.

Anyway, good to see people still rolling their own. Kinda reminds me of the days when people still knew how to fix and maintain their own cars.

As you know, between PC and console, you could not use same commander. Will require to play on console for the two countries (or the two PC in your case)
