Not looked yet but wouldn't that new catalog contain the 160,000 odd stars that FDEV have already entered into the game cutting the work down a lot?
Also the catalog would be in a digital form meaning it should be simple to compare against the current in game galaxy then make the needed changes?

I would expect FDEV to be expecting to make updates like this and having the new data before release should in fact make it easier to get such a large update done.

Well, 219 million minus 160 thousand is about 219 million.

And this is only the start: Gaia is expected to observe another billion stars during the next few years.

As long as the data coming out of the catalog is easy to translate back into the ED star catalog it shouldnt really be an issue.

Adding new exoplanets into the game will probably be more difficult.
