New limpet controller! Not controller(s)

It would consist of a 1-6 or wahtever number variation. Possibly with A-E.

Each variation would have a value of different types of controllers it can have installed. Examples:

Each size variation or letter combo could have a number of different types of limpets it can can control. These could also be called controllers to cause confusion. They would be referred to as controller slots.

A size 1E might have 1 controller slot. This would allow for any limpet controller to be installed that can use only 1 slots. 1B or 1A might have an extra slot.

Each type of current limpet controller would take up x amount of slots to balance them. Lets say a repair limpet takes up 2 control slots.

Then to install it you need to use 2 slots. This would allow for customizable limpet controllers while making it only take up one internal slot.

A size 6 internal limpet controller could have 6 total slots on average. This would allow for multiple of different controllers including multiple of teh same type for extra focus. Like having 3 repair limpets in it for extra healing. A 6B could have 7 controller slots allowing for 3 repair limpets and one extra controller etc.

The point is they are potentially like motherboards with whatever custom items that can be fit into a main limpet controller allowing for various combinations of limpets to be used in a single limpet controller. Then you can choose the size of your limpet controller and other stats based on your desired purpose and add an array of different things to your ship.

Not sure, but controllers in the slots could also have weight. maybe 05 per slot usage. So any slot also adds extra weight as you go up. Or not for simplicity. Although this can be balanced by making the base limpet controller as a whole weight less than the total number of slots. so it can weigh less when empty. Or just give it a static weight and the controllers in the slots weight nothing themselves.

I think FDev have mentioned adding something along those lines in one of the updates scheduled for this year. I just hope they make the limpet changes before/with the Q4 update to Mining.

+1

I am always confused why - while there is only one type of limpet - you need multiple controllers for them.
That should be a software-thing, and in no way you should need multiple controllers.

In fact, get rid of all the multiple controllers and lets just have one, but you need different types of limpets.
It could also be that each limpet sub-controller has special tools to outfit the (blank) limpets with.

As some task are very similar, some limpets can be used for a variety of jobs:
- Collector-limpets could double as Fuel transfer, Research and Hatched breaker limpets - they all have something to grab onto something else, and they have fuel, which tey could transfer to a ship.
- Repair and Decontamination Limpets could be the same, depending on their current configuration.
- Prospector-lLimpets might double as Recon-Limpets,as both are more of more investigative nature.

Anyway: just simplify things.

On that note:

Why do my limpets explode after a certain time?
Why don't the just return to my ship and get new fuel (or what ever they need to continue working)?

What ever controller you take with you should have a certain number of limpets build in.
For refueling, they can either take their fuel from the ship's fuel tanks (one needs to set a certain value in the options-tab for how much fuel they can take and at what value they stop refueling themselves and just retunr and stay in the controller) - or each Limpet-Controller can have a build in fuel tank for the limpets to refuel (depending on the type/grade of the controller).

They could do both. they could have the main part be universal and allow any type of item through or specilized limpets. And then have the slots fill in to increase the statistic for x limpet type by adding hardware to improve performance.

Or have a universal limpet controller for like 1 slot or similar that can do anything but at very reduced functionality. But, if you add other controllers it also adds to the total functionality.

Example:

6B limpet controller: 7 controller slots:

3xrepair controllers + 1x universal controller

This allows the use of reduced limpets of any type, but the universal has much less ability that the others.

Lets say for repair it adds 1x total repair limpets from 9x repair limpets(10 total) at once and a smaller % gain in productivity overall for all repair limpets.

As I believe, the reason for that is just plaind old stuff : fire groups. One module can't have multiple fire groups (in a current design, I suppose) so FD came up with a bit sloppy solution : multiple controllers, to differentiate lmpet functions.
