Newcomer / Intro New misson - No idea how to complete it

Hey,

I hope this is the correct subforum for such nooby questions.
I just started playing the game, and I love it so far.

Today, I got the following mission:

"Rebellenübertragung" = rebels-transmission

So I went to the above specified sector and it was...empty. There were just about 4-5 empty stars with no planets, nothing.
I exited the supercruise, but there was just nothing.

Any tips?
Thanks,
Johnny

All rebel transmission missions are to find a cannister. You have to go to the system and stay in supercruise until you see an Unidentified Signal Source (USS). Then fly to the USS and exit SC as you would for any other target.

You may have to try a few before you find what you are looking for and it pays to travel at around 50% speed, the USS's will appear closer to you.

Alright, didn't know I need to stay in supercruise.
Do I need to use the A-Scanner for the USS's or will they just pop-up in my contact list?

Thanks!
Johnny

Actually, you can travel at 0% throttle (30KM/s) - that way the USS always appear within 1Mm (1,000KM) and you can just line up and drop out of supercruise without having to slow down.

Speed doesn't factor in to USS spawning, but it does factor into reaching them!

*edit* scanner rating makes no difference either.

They just pop up, but not in the contact list but in the first tab with other stellar bodies / objects / stations. Also - just look out for emtpy circles appearing in your line of sight and target lock on them.

Ok, Thanks! I will try it tomorrow and see if I can get it sorted :D

@the100thmonkey
Alright, thanks for your help!

USS are the Elite version of a random encounter, and most of the missions to retrieve an illegal cargo type (transmissions, black boxes, etc) are completed by dropping into them. It's a dice roll each time whether you find what you are looking for, or just an innocent trader, a merchant caravan, pirate, some random cargo canisters (which will register as stolen goods!) etc. You don't have to be on a mission to find them, and mission specific things rarely, if ever, appear when you are not looking for them. However once you have a mission to find something specific then that item is tagged to appear randomly.

Just fly about and they will pop up, however there is a greater likelihood of them occurring in certain areas - eg near nav beacons, stars, starports, conflict areas, etc.

If you fly out into the system away from these areas they become much less common, however I have seen them randomly spawn out in deep, deep space hundreds of light years beyond the frontier. In those cases it is usually a big ship or, very rarely, some cargo.

I can't decide whether USS are a really dumb, simplistic game mechanic or reasonable solution to a need. It's nice that the encounters don't always spawn at a specific area like mobs do in most MMOs - it makes things less predictable.

I had one rebel transmission in a planetless system. There were no USS near the Nov point after waiting 15 mins, but there was an occasional asp that would appear and fly off into the Void. I eventually decided to follow one of them, and after a very short while USS appeared

Strange, because USS pop up with very high frequency usually. Usually can't fly in SC for more than 30 seconds without seeing one. Also helps if you watch the left nav pane for contacts rather than through your HUD. Not all appear directly in your FOV so you can miss some. Also, no need to fly at speed, just set to minimum while in SC and they USS will appear with the same frequency as if you were flying full speed, and also, its a lot easier and quicker to drop into USS from low speed.

You can also find rebel transmissions and black boxes etc in the cargo of ships in the system if you scan them with a cargo scanner. For a pirate style player this means it's a lot easier to scan ships than randomly wait for a uss to spawn.
