Proposal Discussion New modules and upgraded models available over time

In the same way that companies in the real world are constantly researching new and improved products and models, it would be fantastic if the Elite universe had something to mirror this.

Consider the following possibility.

Let's say company X begins to release news (via Galnet, I suppose) that they are researching new improved shields and that they expect to begin shipping in Y amount of weeks/ months and initially only in the IBootis and Chango systems. After time the updated model or new module would become cheaper and more readily available in other systems. Over time older models would become more costly to maintain.

I propose that this would create a few interesting results.

1) It's a good way of keeping the list of outfitting possibilities fresh. I'm not suggesting that every day a new product is released. Rather, there would be a lead in period to the actual release of the updated model/ new module that would take weeks or months to arrive.

2) The new models and modules would help to introduce more variables into the game and possibly help add some additional distinction between systems. In the same way that Silicone Valley was (and perhaps still is) known for being at the forefront of tech development, perhaps some systems more than others would be better known for getting your hands on the latest tech.

3) It would certainly be interesting if there was be a limited run of some products (maybe because they have since become proscribed for one reason or another). Perhaps these could be traded between players for in-game cash (no real world money changes hands).

4) This is how real life works. It would only add to the overall immersion if there is the sense of technological refinement and advancement.

Anyway, I do see problems with this suggestion. However, I've leave it up to others to comment.

What do y'all think?

this should really be in the gameplay and features section. also i believe things similar to this are already planned.

I suppose we could also add to that the possibility of product recalls...

Here's the scene: you are 35 light years from the nearest inhabited system. It's been a rough expedition so far, but the discoveries you have made and the resources found have more than made up for that. Not to mention the "Super Space Karzee 5000" with auto docking and seat warming. Yes indeedy, you are loving your Anaconda. It's the perfect deep space exploration vessel.

So, you're in the galley and frying up some Lavian eggs and looking forward to mapping that asteroid belt you flew past yesterday, when the comms systems beeps at you. A new email (I'm guessing email will still be around in the year 3300)....

"Dear Commander,
We regret to inform you that the Anaconda, Deep Space Edition, that you purchased from LHS 3262 last month has been recalled due to a faulty plasma injector relay circuit thingy on the hyperspace induction module.

It is vital that you take your Anaconda to the nearest Faulcon de Lacey dealer to have this unit replaced as a matter of urgency. Failure to do so could result in miss aligned jumps or exiting hyperspace inside a star. Or worse.

Also the Super Space Karzee 5000 optional extra you had fitted has also been recalled due to "Excessively aggressive pressure differentials". We suggest not using your Super Space Karzee 5000 in the mean time. Failure to do so could result in an unwanted enema, incorrect docking or death.

Best regards,
Faulcon de Lacey Team"

Day. Made.
