Yay...fun modules, or not - badly designed to fit a badly designed ship mechanic is more likely.
-Alternatives that are more costly (yet, sometimes worse than the original)
-Alternatives that are difficult to aquire (need to join faction to gain them, need to rejoin faction half a year later because you need it on another ship)
-Some alternatives don't work or are completely broken
-Lack of options, not everyone flies large ships and it would simply enrich the game if there were multiple sizes of the weapons (SMALL Imperial Hammers for example)
-In 1200 years governments have forgotten how to steal, bribe and copy another governments weapon technology to make their own and they cannot buy the design from commanders to design their own versions...WUT?
Example- The Enforcer Cannon
A lot of people wanted something like this (including me) but this would really have been better as the "Large" S3 Multi-Cannon as a bridge between C2 Gimbals and the larger cannons.
Instead we get a S1 FIXED gun, we already have a staple of multicannons at that size so it was hardly a needed or even fun alternative.
Cytoscrambler
A laser beam that cannot even shoot straight. If they were so afraid it would be op just fix so that ARMOUR PROTECTS MODULES and hull upgrades PROTECTS MODULES AS WELL. Sure, goes through shields like butter but then we might have people who goes with armour tanking instead - an option that is sorely lacking.
FIX the underlying mechanics of the game instead of adding badly designed modules to fit inside the broken mechanic.
-Make Armour Useful (protect modules)
-Make Hull Mods Useful
-Remove reduced damage for smaller weapons used on larger ships (to balance the fact that armour now makes all ships tougher)
