New Nvidia driver - 390.65

Anyone tried this yet in VR? I'm planning to stick to 388.43 unless there is a good reason to change.

Been playing all night with the new driver. No problems at all. I didn't do a proper performance check, but seems the same performance as with my previous driver (388.71) on 1080TI.

they added postprocesing called Nvidia Freestyle now I’m curious if this will work with ED VR

Rally cool! Haven't tried it, but going to if it works with ED VR. :)

P.S. gather its only for screenshots?

P.P.S This is the statement that appears on the Nvidia web site:

"NVIDIA ANSEL™ IN VR
Capture and create in-game screenshots that can be viewed in 360 degrees. Compose your screenshots from any position, adjust them with post-process filters, capture 4K HDR images in high-fidelity formats, and share them in 360 degrees using your mobile phone, PC, or VR headset."

Bold added by me.

Freestyle looks interesting; it's real time post-processing, not just screenshots. Here are the supported games (https://www.nvidia.com/en-us/geforce/geforce-experience/freestyle-games/). No mention of Elite.

Ansel is for photos / 360 screenshots.

Here's the list of currently supported ansel games:

  • The Witness
  • Mass Effect: Andromeda
  • Watch Dogs 2
  • Obduction
  • Mirror’s Edge™ Catalyst
  • ARK: Survival Evolved
  • The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt
  • War Thunder

No mention of Elite.

Nvidia also mention The Division, NMS and a few others on their site (https://www.geforce.com/whats-new/articles/ansel-revolutionizing-game-screenshots), but I think the site needs updating 'cos the wording isn't right (in red)..

"NVIDIA's Ansel, A Revolutionary Game Photography Tool, Coming SoonOur revolutionary Ansel technology is coming soon to a number of top games, including The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt, Epic Games' Fortnite, Paragon and Unreal Tournament, Cyan Worlds' Obduction, Thekla’s The Witness, Boss Key Productions’ Lawbreakers, Ubisoft’s Tom Clancy’s The Division, and the highly-anticipated No Man’s Sky from Hello Games."

I tried this new version but it is atm garbage on my gtx1080.
Had to reinstall the previous version because ED in VR didn't start at all.
Watch out and if you want to try it make a repair point.

Were you launching it from oculus client or home? if so, I have the same problem with 388.43. I have to launch directly from the desktop shortcut.

Thanks for that :)

For those who don't know, here's the statement on the Nvidia web site:

"Personalize Your Gameplay With Freestyle Game Filters
NVIDIA Freestyle game filter is the newest GeForce Experience beta feature which allows you to apply post-processing filters on your games while you play. Right from the in-game overlay, you can change the look and mood of your game with tweaks to color or saturation, or apply dramatic post-process filters like HDR. Freestyle is integrated at the driver level for seamless compatibility with games. To see a full list of games whitelisted for Freestyle, click here."

As per the quoted post, ED is not in the list :(

Disappointing. It's beta ATM though (assume you enabled experimental features in Geforce Experience).

Yes... Never do that....ever. Also GeForce experience is best avoided, historically it’s caused conflicts with Elite game settings. As in, how you like it set up.

The best thing to do with GeForce experience is to print out a picture of it and use it as an effigy and stick many, many pins into it.

Hi F,

Read your post a bit late so had already taken action, but anyway here's an update:

- installed 390.65. No problems, works fine for me.
- Enabled experimental effects and updated Geforce Experience to version 12. All good.

Now, bad (read disappointing) news is that Freestyle didn't work for ED. It didn't cause any problems, just a no show. I assume this is because ED is not one of the supported games. However, do I need to enable the normal Geforce Experience overlay for it to work? ATM have it disabled because haven't been using it.

P.S. Here's the answer:

- The overlay option in Geforce Experience must be on for Freestyle to work;
- However, it still doesn't show. Not broken, but instead of the overlay a message box is displayed which says "the game must be a supported to use this feature".

So fingers crossed, Nvidia will add ED to its white-listed games in due course - ED VR needs an injector given that ReShade doesn't work with VR either. :(

I tried Freestyle with Fallout 4, just to see what it would do.
Basically, seems to add the type of effects to video, that you might add to a photo using photoshop. Examples include black and white, saturation, RGB and so on. In short, looks like with some effort you could make some pretty serious visual shading changes. The other effect I really liked was the depth of field. Probably not relevant for Elite, but was cool with a sniper rifle in Fallout.

Tried 390.65 in VR earlier today. Had a crash in ED ("cannot lock a buffer" etc.) and a couple of freezes lasting at least a second. Once after the monitor came out of standby the refresh rate was set to 30Hz with no option of changing to 60 or 75. ED in 2D is fine. Will give it one more chance before regressing.

I istalled 390.65 mainly beacasue it also "fixes" the Spectre threat. Haven't had the time to test it in VR yet. Will report back on that.

What a joke lol.

For those that have played Ark and tried VR, you will have noticed that NVIDIA supporting Freestyle in it is probably more development effort than Ark got put into its own VR functionality in total... -_-

Truly, truly awful VR support. Such a shame for a glorious, glorious game.

Just tried the new driver and performance wise everything seems to remain the same. There is nothing wrong with it as far as I'm concerned...
