Hardware & Technical New nvidia drivers / GFX boost for VR

I agree nvidia are despicable, but that doesn't mean I'm going to put a sub-standard product in my pride and joy. When I say sub-standard, I'm not talking about performance, I'm talking about refinement, power consumption and all the other 'soft' issues, that Nvidia has always been better at. The easiest way to think of these two companies is that Nvidia is a typical japanese car company, all about efficiency and not giving you anything you don't need. ATI is like Dodge, the more dirty horsepower and lump iron V8s they can throw into a car, the better. Both cars have epic performance but go about it in totally different ways.

I did not enjoy paying 200e extra for my Gsync monitor over its freesync counterpart, I must say. Grrrr. Nvidia tax, but as long as they are the best, I'll pay it. Like a fool.

I always use 'custom install' to exclude GeForce experience. ....it causes problems and conflicts with in game settings.
In addition I see you now have to create an account to use it even, that only supports my not wanting to use it even more.
I will not include GeForce experience all the time the drivers work without it.

All that stuff is GeForce Experience 3. If you stick with 2 (see earlier post) then you get to keep ShadowPlay (which was actually quite nice).

ok uninstalled experience trash latest version, downloaded and installed older version, restarted pc, and the shadow play part doesn't recognize my 1080ti and says it cant work as minimum specs are not met lol

ok changing the shortcut to - "C:\Program Files (x86)\NVIDIA Corporation\NVIDIA GeForce Experience\GFExperience.exe" -shadowplay

seems to have worked will test it now

Initialisation. Sorry, I can't help it. :/

initialism
ɪˈnɪʃ(ə)lɪz(ə)m
noun
noun: initialism; plural noun: initialisms
an abbreviation consisting of initial letters pronounced separately (e.g. BBC )

many people don't know the difference between initialism and acronym,

an acronym is where the combined letters create an actual pronounceable word like Scuba (self contained underwater breathing apparatus) or laser (light amplification by stimulated emission of radiation)

an initialism is where the letters need to be pronounced like FBI (Federal Bureau of Investigation)

Or Big Rat (brain impulse galvanoscope record and transfer) ... anyone? anyone? :p

Huh, cool ... never actually knew that before. Thanks.

VRWorks features have been available for quite some time now -- it is the latest update to Eve:Valkyrie that implements them in the game - not the latest driver.

I've been running with this latest driver since it came out the other day. No difference that I can see with my EVGA 1080ti FTW3. (Running out to a 55" Sony XBR LCD Panel @ 1080p / 60hz)

Its rare these days that any of these driver updates make any difference in my rig's performance numbers. If I do see a difference, it is usually a degradation in performance rather than a boost. Although I have not seen that since I started running the 1080ti.

Anyone else look at EVE: Valkyrie and just see CQC (but with players)?

I read ya, brother.

@NeilF - Yes if CQC played like that in ED it would be great.

No, it would be better because Valkyrie flies like a fighter jet, and you cannot control the throttle accurately - only brake - thrust - boost possible. Many times I found myself reaching for the lateral thrusters only to have a sobering realisation that they are, in fact, actually NOT THERE. (cue asteroid crash sound).

MSGAA, "we like making new acronyms"

That's an initialism, not acronym :D

Ahem:

Valkyrie is fun to play for a couple of hours, until you realise just how arcadey it really is the three speeds, brake / cruise / afterburner, is really lame, as is the fact its all deathmatch nonsense. It would be a lot better if you had more thruster controls and an equivalent to FA off. Sadly CQC is dormant, and being limited to the single weapons system onboard your ship at any one time takes so much of the tactical fun out of the game that it is a bit lame.

I wonder how CQC heavyweight would play with small landing pad ships, things like viper mk3's and cobra mk3's and iEagles?

Back onto the original topic, if FDev do not reach out to Nvidia and collaborate to make their game optimised on the main gfx card manufacturers drivers I think they would be very foolish. Yes I know COBRA engine runs on multiple platforms, and thus so does elite, but PC was where the kickstarter funding came from, and the majority of sales are PC related. Also the other COBRA games such as planet coaster + other new project that /Michael Brookes is involved in now would also benefit from the Nvidia optimisations. Furthermore reworking the PC version of the engine to utilise the latest toys such as VR works, MSGAA and optimisations at driver level to improve performance / quality would be worthy of a press release / fresh reviews, if they were to make the approach now, they could have the optimisations in place for 3.0, and this would make great marketing material for season 3. Imagine how much hype tehy could make by setting up season 3 as elite:dangerous 3 rather than marketing it as a DLC, then if PC Games journalists were fed info on all the optimisations, and look at how shiny this bit is now, and heres a new mechanic in game, and look how lovely and smooth this interaction is now, and look at this reworked mechanic here, and this buffed bit there, and the reworked graphics there.... its all column inches and good and free publicity.

Hi everyone,
n case you didn't heard, nvidia released new drivers with a new technology that significantly boost the graphics on Eve Valkyrie
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nlbNmts3iek

i just wanted to know if elite also get/will get those improvements as well , since i don't think this new thing is just for Eve but every VR games in general

It seems very unlikely at this point. The anti-aliasing, in particular, has major limitations. Here's a snippet from a post I made in another thread...

It looks really good, but there are some serious limitations as to when it can be used. The biggest is that MSGAA requires a GTX 1070, 1080, or 1080 Ti graphics card. That excludes many NVidia and all AMD users. It also requires that the materials must be "unified", that is, no custom shaders for different materials, like skin, water, or hair...

To derail the grammar offtopic by another - I just got a message from a friend saying the newest nvidia drivers cause stuttering in VR. He owns a Vive and an i7 + gtx 1080Ti, so its not a problem of potato hardware. There was a fix released which fixed nothing apparently, IDK about now because I'm away from my rig and returning home on weekend.

My personal policy on new drivers is always let others test them before I install them. Saves so much time having the hotfix in hand before actually installing to problematic software.
