New Oculus owner owner

o7 Cmdrs,

Just acquired the Oculus rift and fired up Elite for the fist time. :)

Must admit I was a bit skeptical that VR would make a lot of difference to an already great game. But all I can say is WOW!
Being able to look around 360deg is amazing and combat in a HAZ res is incredible, in and around the asteroids is brilliant.

Now for the settings / tweaks to get the best out of it. Any pointers would be welcome.

What's your hardware?

But after that we can only do general recommendations.
You have to figure out what works for you, what setting that you find important cause I don't think anyone will ever agree on this. which is fine.

Personally my top priority is frame rate.
For others it's perceived clarity.

This depends mostly on your gpu though, but I would be cautious about supersampling or HMD-Q.

Also the terrain work slider, push that all the way to the right.

you own an owner of an oculus rift? cool! how much did (s)he cost? ;)

it really all depends on your machine.

I have a gtx 980 and i7 5820 @ 4.2ghz
I play on VR high with some settings dropped back to VR medium.
I DONT use supersampling over and above what is default.

Framerate is everything in VR, eye candy a very distant 2nd plae because poor performance in VR can actually make you ill.

oh and consider getting dr kaii's app

I too have joined the dark side of Oculus Rift

The confusing bit was actually getting elite to do VR, didnt realise you have to go into settings - graphics 3D and set to HMD, plus in the Oculus settings make it allow any app to use its VR equipment.

Having used a PSVR and Trinus there is a notable improvement in fidelity and I can now easily read text within the HUD on default settings.

Welcome welcome to an ever growing club, you will enjoy this so much. Wait till you go in the SRV!!

As Mike has said, my biggest tip is to get Dr Kaii's quite excellent program (App as the youngsters like call things now ;) ) ED Profiler, and just have a play with different settings. Setup loads of profiles and name them so you remember which is which, when you find one that suits you use it and get rid of the rest. Don't be afraid to try all different settings, with this tool it is easy to revert back if ED crashes or things run like treacle!

ENJOY!

Thanks all.

@TorTorden
Hardware is intel I6770K (slightly Over clocked), 32GB Ram, 1070 GTX 8GB, 512GB M.2 drive (ED Install).
All seems to work fine, but the rift and 1070 are all at default settings, so some tweaking is sure to be needed.

@Mad Mike Argos £399 Headset, 2 x hand controls & 2 x room sensors.
No odd feelings yet fingers X'd

@cOOky1970
my problem was running ED without VR once I had it working, then I read somewhere to set up 2 launch icons on the desktop and in one put /NOVR as a parameter for the executable.

Off to download Dr Kaii's now.

This initial lukewarm attitude towards VR never ceases to amaze me.

Well I found as many bad reviews as good ones & nothing definitive to say it was absolutely defacto brilliant and without doubt I'd like it.

However after an opportunity to try a Rift setup flying an F18 Hornet in DCS, I found that I did not appear to suffer some of the negative effects others do in VR. I was really impressed and took the plunge the following day. So from lukewarm to enthusiastic in about 15 mins. Also in the past I made several attempts in trying find a local retailer who had a demo unit to try, only one store had one, but no staff available to assist or only at times I was unable to attend.

Anyway after several days playing, I'll say for me VR in general is amazing, ED is incredible & DCS is excellent as well.

So cautious rather than lukewarm :D

Check the dates of those bad reviews. It's difficult for me to say anything about the VIVE but I know that Frontier have done a lot to improve the quality of the graphics in VR to such an extent that there is now no problem reading any of the text.

Also I'd like to point out that slavery is wrong. You should not be allowed to own anyone who has their own VR headset.

Greetings commander and welcome to the wonderful world of Virtual Reality. Re: recommended graphics settings with a GTX 1070, here's a post I made to another user a while back that might be useful ...

Should give you a good place to start from at least. And yes, definitely download and install drkaii's EDProfiler, it's pretty much invaluable, especially if you plan to play sometimes in VR and sometimes not (in which case you can use it to create two separate profiles with different graphics settings for each and then switch between them really easily).

Yeah, but you said you didn’t think VR would do much for ED. Anyway so glad you got converted.

It far exceeds what I thought it would be like. Now there's no looking back, well actually there is, virtually speaking of course.

@Alec Turner thanks for the pointers.

No, not virtually.

I think you can literally look back now :)

I just wish for the day when I can lean back, shout profanities and throw beer cans at my crew.
