Newcomer / Intro New Old Guy

Im fairly new to Ed and am 45ish, loving this game, Finally a game i can just chill in if i want and see the sights. I choose to keep my sittle sidewinder and bought an adder. Make just enough money to let me enjoy life and explore. I didnt know ED started in the 80s until listening to a podcast the other day. Embarrassingly. Looking forward to chatting with you all and exploring the dark.

Welcome to the Elite Galaxy commander!

45? A youngster! ;) The oldest known active commander turns 82 this year. (I'm 58 btw.) The huge spread in age is one of the nice things of the Elite community. There are also, let's say, "not so nice" things in this community but they mostly hang out in Deciat.

Maybe you've already found most of the resources listed below. If not, have a look at them and in any case don't hesitate to ask questions here in the forum.

In-game help is available in the form of menu links to the Pilot's Handbook and the Codex (right-hand cockpit panel 1st tab).
For a very good beginner's guide see: An in-depth beginner’s guide to Elite: Dangerous.
Tutorials covering all aspects of the game, many of them in the form of YouTube videos, are available from ED Tutorials.
There is a wealth of useful information available in these forums spread out over hundreds of threads. Thanks to commander @Alec Turner you can access all of that information and more via a single thread: Alec's best of the forum (and elsewhere) [v2].
Here is a good guide on the background simulation (BGS) that simulates the economical and political changes caused by player actions in inhabited systems.
Also check out the inara.cz and eddb.io websites with (almost) realtime info on practically everything in the game.
The coriolis.io and edsy.org websites let you design your ships before buying them.
There are many more Tools and Websites created by fans that make life in the galaxy better.
And last but not least, the Elite Dangerous Wiki contains extensive information on nearly all aspects of the game.

Hello and welcome to the game youngster, actually you are probably around the average age of players based on a very outdated forum survey.

Taking your time and seeing the sights is a great way to play Elite so have fun and enjoy.

Welcome commander, im an older player too (mid 50s "cough") been here just over a year after spending my gaming life in Fantasy MMOs such as Everquest 1/2, WOW and ESO.
This is now my home, gone are the days of trying to keep up with the meta or that must have new gear, there's nowt like relaxing in my mining T10.
In here there is no must do, you do what you want and there's plenty of it.

Fly safe O7

Welcome to the game. The median age here is fairly high. I'm 70+ myself.

Don't fly without a rebuy. Ignore the Engineers until you actually need something from them, and know what it is and why you want it. Get a better Frameshift Drive right away. Unbind the Jettison All key, and probably Silent running while you're at it.

But mostly, have fun :)

I‘ve been given some really good advice here over the years, but unbinding that key saved me a small fortune.

I’ll never forget my first interdiction when I decided to give a pirate the two tonnes or so he wanted and dumped the entire contents of my Type 6 into the void - that was a big percentage of my bank balance at the time.

Welcome to the game Cmdr. Enjoy the early period, making mistakes and learning the lessons can lead to some fun memories.

I can relate a lot to what you say: I discovered ED at 45-ish and in hindsight I wish I had known about Elite when I used to play with my C64 back in the 80's.

But coming so late into the game made me appreciate it for what it is, and I love it!

Enjoy your ride!

It would actually be nice to have some silver hair. Or just hair.
Some silver hair is worse than no hair.
I've got an unmanageable birds nest on my head. It's my original colour with grey streaks above the ears and in the beard. I look like a bloody anime character.
My brother was bald from his 30s and looked much cooler. :)

Oh, and OP, welcome to the game! Happy fumbling around.
