Newcomer / Intro New old player reporting back from the void and asking for "help"

Hey commanders,

after years, I'm back from my never ending oddyssey to the outer boarders of you galaxy.
I'm actually about 1.7K ly away from the "bubble", getting closer pretty fast, and I could use some help getting back to Shinrarta Dezhra - as this is, where my journey once began...
While being out there for about 2 years now, my ship's systems changed a lot. Strange enough, I don't know if my "old" system and planet-scans (I did about 1.5 years ago) are still valid or if they are gone.
If I could make it back in one piece, I'll see how much my data is worth - and I can hopefully pay than for your escort.

So, anybody out there, willing to help an very old vessel to make its way back home? I have no weapons. Only my ASP and me.
I have a "friendly" standing with all three major factions "Federation, Empire and Alliance".

If you want to help me getting back alive and in one pice, then please give a shout. Thank you!

hmm, I always played "open" - is it possible to change from "open" to "solo" and back to "open" without losing or changing anything?

yes
the other option is remain in open and likely die in Shinrarta, or go to a different system with no cmdrs in it...
why return with carto in an explorer ship to shinrarta in open, shouldn't even be a consideration....if you want to keep the carto data..

unless that ship is armed to the hilt..

The safest way to return is on solo. If you have no cargo or bounty you are safe from NPCs. With so much exploring data you can become allied with many factions and stations if that is of interest (by selling screens of data in separate stations).

Welcome back Cmdr.

Sound advice so far and welcome back! @@@07

I would also suggest, as you are carrying so much carto data, you submit to any random interdiction by an NPC - in solo, obviously, and only if your cargo hold is empty. I would, personally, consider it too risky to try and beat the mini game.

hmm, does that mean, that NPCs attack ONLY, when I carry something in my cargo hold?

... and thank you for the advice to split the carto to more then one station to get a better status at more factions. Never thought about that ... ! :)

NPC interdictions are unpredictable. Most of the time my hold is empty when I get one but that's not to say that's definitive. I've also been interdicted by system authority ships and I "must submit to a scan". It's all OK as, if my hold is empty, the only thing hurting is my pride when submitting (I may have said that somewhere before :D ). You won't - at least, I haven't been - blown up after requesting mercy :D

There is always "The Iridium Wing" - the explorer's escort service - but solo is safest.

Random NPCs will try and interdict anything but once in normal space as long as you have nothing other than limpets in your hold and don’t attack them they will just scan your ship be rude to you over comms about your lack of loot and go away. Mission based NPCs can be more aggressive.

Some players who hang around high traffic areas are not so well mannered so Solo or a non PvP Private Group are good.

If you have engineers (that you have access to) or factions you want to improve your standings with then save chunks of data to sell to them.

Aye. I already switched to Solo. Otherwise it would be too dangerous.
I only hope, that the scan-data survived the major updates through the last two years ... there are some earth-like transformable planets ...

NPC interdictions are so easy to beat I wouldn't risk submitting to one in an Asp - I'm not that great a pilot and I can even usually beat them in a Type 9 (total pig in SC!). It's not worth the risk of losing your data. I've read about other cmdrs being killed by random NPCs on return to the bubble for no reason, BUT I've never had it happen to me so I'm not sure if it really happened, or if someone mistook a human CMDR for an NPC.

Wow, this was like reading a gripping novel! And congratulations, Explorer, welcome back!

I'm at the very beginning of my voyage, just now making money to get ready for some exploration... I wish there was an opportunity to listen to what you have been through... Like those events where you can meet and listen to explorers, ask questions etc... :)

Do you have any first hand tips? :)

If you have a few minutes then you might like this article (and the forum thread about the actual rescue):

There are other examples but that is the one that really caught people's imaginations.
