New PC - and on trying to load just get a black screen. HELP!?

I've just upgraded to a complete new PC and when I try to load the game I just get a black screen … last time I got the desktop flickering by about every 3 secs for about half a sec.
Any ideas on how to change or update any settings? …. when I can't even get far enough to look at options?

New pc. I'm assuming the pc itself is ok...Windows 10 etc all stable?
Firstly did elite install ok?

Secondly have you updated your graphics card drivers?

Thirdly.. Run elite from it's own shortcut not via steam or other portal.
Also run in administration mode.
Think it's a resolution in relation to your monitor/tv and elites in-game settings.
Just my twoP worth.
Keep us posted.

do you have any other games you can try to see what happens?
what spec is graphic card?
updated drivers?
I've tried a couple of other games through Steam and World of Warships for one I know works fine.

Graphics card is Radeon RX 5700XT and I believe all drivers etc are up to date.

I will continue having a look later and update with more info.

what about C++ redistributables? or some version of .net? (this problem sounds like you might be missing a redest for the game but steam is supposed to install them for you)
if you do have the redistributables have you tried re-installing them? (or pick the "repair" option when running the installer)
also, re-verify local files through steam just to make sure everything is clean and not corrupted

i have the same card in my build no issues at all currently i am on 20.7.1 drivers and just about to update too 20.7.2
what mobo do you have? is your bios current? i had some issues when i built my machine that a bios update solved, some were related to graphics.

Hmm. Graphics card is on 19.8.1 … I will look for that update to 20.7.2 to be current
MOBO - B550 Aorus Pro Version
BIOS - F1 (I think there's an F2? - I'll look)
Processor - AMD Ryzen 5 3600 6-core processor

That sounds like a GPU/Driver issue.

But take that back one step at a time.
  • what is "a completely new PC"?
  • did you take over anything from your old PC (backups, users, configuration, drives)?
  • or did you just transplant the drive
  • or did you do a complete new configuration from scratch (installed Windows, created users, logged into Steam/FD and downloaded the game)?

In case of the latter, I'd suspect Steam to not actually having downloaded/installed a clean configuration, but copying over old configurations and drivers, or relying on stuff being there that was there previously, but now isn't (those C++ redist...).

Oh, and I did something related yesterday: transplanted a new Mobo/CPU into my old PC, swapping over the SSD and everything else. Win10 worked like a charm - the only major problem was that I couldn't activate the ethernet port without downloading the board drivers first, for which of course I needed a working internet connection  . Just glad that I chose a mobo with WiFi - for some strange reason, that one worked. ED also started up - but I have an older setup which I got directly from FD, so no Steam to mess up here.

I'm using the the latest non-beta radeon drivers(ver. 20.4.2) and the game has no issues for me. I'm using a Saphire Pulse RX 5700 XT. Try Elite in window and borderless modes to see if it's a issue with your hdmi/display port handshaking.

It seems Elite Dangerous might be asking for a resolution and refresh rate your display device can't handle.

Turn off enhanced adaptive sync.

Ok all, it's working now. Unfortunately I cannot tell you for definite what the issue was as I have done several things all at once!

First off, it is a completely NEW PC with a 1TB SSD (plus 2Tb HD for good measure!) and completely fresh Win10 install, new Mobo, processor, graphics card, even a nice new case! The works. The only things the same are the 2 x 24inch monitors, 1 x DVI and 1 x HDMI. They are now running off DP to appropriate converters. Hopefully a 27inch freesync DP one to come soon, budget permitting!

I built the PC using the HDMI monitor (with DP to HDMI converter) and now I have connected the other monitor the HDMI one insists on being the 'primary' where Steam runs all games.

So, I had also uninstalled Elite due to problems as above prior to connecting 2nd monitor. I then remembered I had copied the folder of log files across to try to make my keyboard and joystick setup a lot easier so I moved these elsewhere … I am guessing these log files MAY contain some config details for graphics??

Then I upgraded the Graphics card software to the latest 20.7.2 version and went and reinstalled Elite. So, it could have been the graphics drivers, or it could have been the old log file … or even a combination of both? Anyway, it all seems to be working fine now. Thanks everyone for your help and suggestions! Now, how do I get it to run
