new pc build problem

perhaps the tech members can advise me on a problem im having, so i built a new pc and am in the process of moving into it, its a ryzen 5800x on a tuf gaming b550 plus mobo. im also using a 500 gb m.2 on the board for the boot drive. i installed my 1tb sata drive and an older 1060 vid card to get it up and going before i make the move, problem is it would not boot to windows, so i unplugged the sata drive and still no boot, got the bios screen but nothing after, used the windows usb to recover it then it was fine, i had thought perhaps the vid card but i plugged the sata drive in again and same thing, so what i ended up doing was setting the sata port the drive is using to hot swap enabled then plugged in the sata drive while booted to windows and it then worked fine, restarts fine now. i couldnt see the sata drive in the bios before that, now its recognized and im downloading elite right now. i dont recall having to install a secondary drive in this way before this pc i built.

You need to check the boot order in the BIOS. Sometimes plugging in a new (to the computer) drive can cause the boot order to change. Check it with the 1tb drive attached, otherwise it will not show up in the list.

oddly the new drive was not showing in the bios at the time, after i was able to make it work by hot plugging it i then restarted and looked it appeared as e drive

A couple of remarks...

I once migrated a hard disk and Windows had a hiccup in recognizing it as the boot drive. I believe that I had to set it as active once again in Windows drive management, but the detail of what I did have faded from my memory.

Often you'll see that M.2 slots , when occupied, will disable a certain SATA port. It's worth checking your mobo docs. To illustrate an example: on my mobo, if I install a M.2 SSD in the M2_1 slot then the SATA_5 port is disabled.

Good luck...

my one problem is ive been out of the pc building game for about 10 years so im unfamiliar with some aspects of these new mobos. im just wondering if this is a thing with the mobo or some other issue. i cant find much online detailing my problem im having.

From Asus website, sounds like this was the issue.

2 M2_2 shares bandwidth with SATA6G_56. When M.2_2 is populated, SATA6G_56 will be disabled.
