New pc microphone help required

Just got a new pc and can't get my headset mic to work. Under recording devices there are 3 devices - "microphone", "line" and "analog". No idea which one to set as default or what other settings to use. Gone into control panel and setup microphone, but it doesn't register. Any help/advice welcome.

Cheers.

How/where do you have it plugged in?

Open Control Panel - Sound and the small screen on the left will open. Select the recording tab to see available recording devices.

You new mike should be listed if it's plugged in and you should just set it to the default device.

If you speak into the mike you should see the green bars fluctuate with the input volume level.

which headset coneection point are you using 3.5mm combo socket or 2x 3.5mm sockets or USB headset...
Which revision of windows are you using...

Make sure the plugs are in the correct ports (easy to get wrong)

Also - is this a off the shelf PC? some home builds may not have wired the front ports

If possible - try connecting direct to the mobo in the rear ports

Using old school 2 sockets instead of a combo socket can mean you get the sockets mixed up..
But that would also mean you get no game sound out the headphones so having no audio as well is no mic working would have been the bigger issue..

IF you plugged in to a combo socket and not sound out only socket would also be the clue... Newer PCs will only have combo 3.5mm port with audio out and then Line in socket not mic in...
IF your using the Correct mic in socket as you pull the plug in and out the Mic plugged in status changes on the record screen...

Thinking back to my PC, I have a soundblaster audio system on the motherboard. There are several options for the use of the audio inputs/outputs using the soundblaster app (e.g. multipurpose input etc). Would this be a factor?

I have it plugged into the mic and headphone ports (1 pin each) on the front of the machine.

running win 11
If it's a custom-built PC, those ports may not be connected internally. None of my PC's have functional audio ports at the front because I didn't bother connecting them.

Regardless, you can try plugging in to the ports at the back of the PC as a test.

bought it built from a very reputablt company. I'm sure it isn't a build problem, it's just me being a bit of a thickie.

Only usb ports left on the mobo. my headset is 2x 3.5 pin

Have you tested the headset mic on another PC, or tried another mic on this PC? Electronics today are made to break, yours might have done just that.

Make sure that in Windows Settings, under Microphone, you're allowed apps to access it.
