ABOUT TO PULL THE TRIGGER

I am taking my happy @$$ to microcenter and im going to build a PC.

I read up on the new bits and such.
Give me a recommendation.

i7700k
Asus ROG MB ( not sure which )
16 gigs ddr4 2400 corsair
Asus ROG GTX 1080
850w power
The rest is inconsequential

How am i doing so far?

mind you, im only playing ED at the moment and im doing it on a 1080.
i may play rust at some point.
Im not doing VR

very nice rig. Future proof and perfect for VR (you should really try ED in VR it is sooooo amazing).
650W PSU would do the job as well. And don't save on the PSU.

Dunno about Ryzen.

What are the thoughts on a 1070

Since I'm not going VR I don't need quite so much horsepower

I know of that I don't have to have the best of everything but high-end is still nice

Edit:

Here's another question I have for you all.

Is there a comparable AMD set up?
Is anybody running AMD cards and getting awesome performance out of them?

It would appear that the standard right now seems to be the GTX 1070/1080.

I've bought the components now, not got them all yet so it's unbuilt but I decided to go with the i7 7700 (not k). Mostly it came down to my motherboard requirements, which are fairly simple (just wanted room to eventually fit 64Gb memory) so with the recent intel price drop I was able to get an intel cpu/mobo cheaper than an AMD alternative (I was considering a Ryzen 1700).

Maybe in a few months more variety of cheap (but quality) AMD mobos will become available but for now, £275 for an i7 7700 vs £300 for a Ryzen 1700 and the availability of a mobo without a lot of stuff I wouldn't use swung the deal.

With the spare cash I was able to buy an m.2 drive instead of a SATA SSD too, so hopefully that'll give me a little more overhead before I need to upgrade again too :)

btw another (very minor) factor was that the intel socket 1151 has a ton of existing CPU cooler options because it's standard is unchanged from the previous several iterations. The AM4 socket is different so again, fewer options atm. I bought a Coolermaster Hyper 212 evo HSF for £28, with the AMD one I'd have had to get a conversion kit too (not expensive, but not free).
