New pilot help - frustrated, when does the game get fun?

That's the thing, it was a fine but it said wanted. Also I only found out about the legal contact thing at the time I was docked there - had no idea that this can be done from elsewhere. WHY GAME NO TELL US?
There's far too much going on with Elite for it to tell you everything, and there's no way you could remember it all at the start anyway. Take your time and examine everything, especially stuff like station menus, since goods and services vary depending on a bunch of variables.

Been playing 3 days. Hauled around enough cargo to eventually buy and upgrade a Cobra Mk III. Did a mission, accidentally hit some stationary NPC as I came out of hyperspace. Get wanted status. Headed to the system where I was wanted, to clear it up, because I didn't know how or what the process was for that. They wanted me to pay a 5,000 fine. I had less than that but about $250k in cargo that I wasn't allowed to sell because of the fine. I had no choice but to leave the station so they shot me down. Lost first ship and the cargo, now in significant debt. That right there is a terrible game mechanic.

Had an open assignment for a pirate hunting mission that should have been easy (for Harmless rating). Tried that, got destroyed again, now in more debt.

Went on another mission, got a wanted status and destroyed again and now in even more debt.

I want to give up, this is frustrating and not at all fun. There isn't even a way to reset from start or to reload so what is the point? I bought this for a single player experience, not whatever this idiocy is.

Can I reset from start? Should I have done more pilot federation missions before taking the job to explore and finding out only after that that kicks me out of the relative safety of the federation? CAN I STILL DO THAT? Just ed off and frustrated and stuck, do not know how to proceed in a way that makes the game an enjoyable experience. Also I hate combat, I do not have a good control setup (keyboard and mouse) for it and I have a condition that prevents my full concentration during time-sensitive things like that.

Just. I can't even.
3 days....
Try 6 years.
Still loving it.
Patience is truly a virtue it seems.

I'll agree wholeheartedly with the suggestion to get a HOTAS - it makes control much more intuitive (for me anyway) - even the Thrustmaster 'budget' version is very good.
Stocks are almost non-existent in the UK but looks like another container load is arriving for distribution in around a week.

Getting started in the game is the most fun.
Well, we have a bit different definition of "fun". Now, after 850h into the game I can say that I am starting to get the good grasp on majority of subjects (apart from BGS and power play)... Beginnings however... I am not surprised new players go through hell actually trying to learn ED so they can enjoy the game they have purchased...

It's much, much easier now than it used to be. What with a newbie area, in game tutorials, a codex and a manual (albeit slightly out of date) to give you pretty much everything you need to get started.

In my opinion, part of the attraction for this game was learning how to play it. Even after 1500 hours over 2 platforms I'm still learning new things.

That is true, our own definition of fun.

I'm just about to repeat myself, so apologies to all, but, I easily earn 30m in an hour without even trying. There is nothing in the game that I cannot do for lack of funds.

When I first started however, this was obviously not true. That era of having to choose carefully between this module and that module, based entirely own the fact that I was limited by money, was a great time and one I look back on with great fondness. I SAVED for a Python, it took ages, today I could purchase over a thousand of them. There was something about the risk then that I don't get now.

I could wipe save and start again, the thing is, with a few thousand hours in the game, I can't pretend to not know the stuff I know. So really quickly I would be back where I am now. It's like wishing to read your favourite book again for the first time.

I'm not asking this to be resolved, but when I see threads like OP's, it takes me back to those days and I think, yeah, they were fun days.

You mean, you dont like being disconnected, or have the game crap on you for wasting your time with missions you cant complete?
Nobody really likes disconnections even as rare as they are, as for missions i decided nearly 5 years ago that I would only bother about them for things like ranks or permits so they have rarely wasted my time away from having fun.

I can see the Fortnite generation having trouble for sure, but it's not entirely their fault. Games don't expect much of players anymore. Things have changed a lot since the times when games were intentionally difficult, because the harder they were, the more 10 and 20 pence pieces you fed them. Younger generations have never had access to those games, and so haven't had the same opportunities to learn patience and other skills or qualities that are helpful with obtuse games like ED.
