I would suggest to trade enough to get a Viper. If you can hold off, trade up to a Type 6, then keep trading to get a Cobra.
The trade way to get any ship is to start in a Hauler, Trade yourself into a type 6, then a Type 7. Trade up to either a Python or Type 9. Then trade in either ship and get your hearts desire fighter at that point.
RES's have now become profitable, so if you want to fight your way up then start in a Viper and make your money up to a Vulture. Whatever you decide, make sure its something you will want to do for a few weeks (shorter if you have more time).

It really depends. If you head to more populated areas, you will see more people. However, the galaxy really is massive and once you get off the beaten path, even just 10 lys the population thins out.
This is not like a regular MMO...the map is huge, the instancing further complicates meeting people (due to the peer to peer nature of the game), etc. Meeting people in Open can be a very rare experience. I always suggest that you try to find an Open playing group of people and join up and learn the ropes from them.

I'll make it pretty short because it's a pretty simple question. This game seems no different than Euro Truck Simulator in Space, with the occasional event of being car jacked by robbers (space pirates). On top of that, I'm in the online world and I have yet to see any other living soul and I have been around a few light years It feels like.
Is my comparison spot on or is it off? Im praying that it's off because I thought this game was something else entirely and am currently extremely disappointed to have supported it.
Thanks for your time.
