Newcomer / Intro New player here is Odyssey necessary?

Hi, I bought Elite: Dangerous ages ago & forgot I had it. Remembered About it, decided to try play it, remembered my Frontier details & linked to Steam to download it. Noticed on Steam theres a sale on for an Expansion called Odyssy which seems to be rather disliked. So the question can you have fun in the game without it? I'm just interested in playing casually, dont have much time at the moment.

There is more than enough to do in Horizons to keep you busy and having fun for years without needing to buy Odyssey. That said, Odyssey isn't as bad as the reviews make it out to be but I stop short of recommending it at this point.

Yes, you can be absolutely fine without Odyssey, the game is massive to keep you entertained for a long time, especially if you play it casually (if this is the kind of game you like).
At one point, when you will have enough understanding of the game, you will be in a better position to decide by yourself if what Odyssey adds to the game is something you would be interested in, or not.

Absolutely you can have lots of fun in the game without Odyssey.

What it adds is the ability to land on some additional worlds, ones with a trace of atmosphere, you will also be able to leave your ship on foot to walk on planets and visit the interiors of Stations and bases but not the interior of your ship.

If you're new to the game Horizons has plenty to keep you busy for a very long time. Odyssey does add to the Horizons content but how much it adds very much depends on how much time you want to spend on foot. Bear in mind the additional work required from your system, if yours is a bit older, lower end or how high you like your settings.

I have three accounts; two have Odyssey and one doesn't. If I find a sale I'll probably get Odyssey fot that too but I'm in no rush. The sunsets are gorgeous and I'm lucky enough to be able and happy enough to run Odyssey in VR (though I don't play on foot much) and think its pretty damn good now and pretty damn, well pretty.

In my opinion the only issue that could arise for you as a new player running Horizons is that if you ask a question of other Cmdrs without stating you're on Horizons the advice you receive could be a little confusing if people refer to slightly different UI and so on - obviously that won't happen on this sub-fourm, these guys are On. It. :)

As a counterpoint...

Yes, you can play ED without Odyssey but EDO (Elite: Dangerous - Odyssey) adds a lot more content, although it has many detractors.

I am not one of them, however. I really like EDO, enjoy the on-foot missions (inasmuch as the ones I've actually done) and the exobiology stuff (although I'd agree on its grindy nature). You could, in theory, only ever play Odyssey if you wanted to stick to on-foot missions and not even bother with a ship to fly around in. Oddy is nowhere near as bad as some make it out to be. My advice would be: if you have the money, buy the dlc and try it. If you don't like it, don't play it and put the outlay down to experience.

I would reiterate, though, what @Para Handy said: EDO is very demanding of your hardware, even now after many optimiisations. If you have the oomph, great, if not, you'll find youself dialling back (a lot) on the graphical niceties.

Lastly... EDO, like EDH, needs a lot of practice to git gud. You reep what you sow.

Good luck!
