Newcomer / Intro New player, I died and my money is gone.

I guess parking in the wrong spot is a serious offence that results in death sentence. Silly noob! My question is if there is some kind of banking system to protect my earnings? I've been having a look around and haven't found anything yet. I'm still exploring the UI which is a bit much to absorb. Thanks.

You made me laugh! +1 rep to celebrate your noobness .
Yes, landing in the wrong docking bay is a loitering offense that would lead to all kinds of griefing if they weren't harsh with it.

I'm not too bothered. Lesson learned. What I would like to know is if there is in game banking or does death always result in full loss?

On death there is a 5% insurance fee that you need to pay to reclaim your ship.Press '4' to see it.
If you don't have that amount of credit than you have to start over in a starter ship.
So always cover your insurance costs or you will regret it, since we all know that misfortune comes always when you can't afford it.

Apart from paying the 5% insurance, all or your money is fully protected. You do lose your cargo, exploration data and unclaimed bounties, but nothing else

Thanks Star. So when I die, I need to have the funds to pay the insurance cost. What has me puzzled is that my money was gone after I died. How would I pay the insurance? I'm in a noob ship and the amount was so little, I hardly care. Dust myself off and try again. I'm just wondering for future references.

I'm guessing since neither of you mentioned the bank, there is not one.

Is it? Hmm... I probably looked at something wrong, I dunno. I'll have another look.

Appreciate your help guys. Thanks.

Lost a python at 50 million and started over in a sidewinder... Went in to early and decide to go without insurance then I got trapped in the mail slot with a lakon 9 npc. I recovered now running a Anaconda making a million per round trip. Lesson learned made sure I had fifty million extra when I went to the Anaconda .

I can't fathom the neural investment you have made in ED, as I sit here on a brand new ship, and in noob status myself.

Crap, I just realized my interface crashed and I was in full frame shift going extra solar when it happened. Logged in to ask a configuration question and get distracted by all this great chatter.

I just realized I have no idea what happens when one leaves the bridge, I hope it does me better than it did to CmndKholt.

Best,
Shinkaze

When you die you will see the insurance screen, read it well before you click something.
you get the choices to start over in a sidewinder, buy back your ship and to drop modules and ship parts.

Essentially, your credit store is your "bank". As mentioned already, you can't lose anything from it. You just have to manage it and not put too much in play - with regards insurance, like others have mentioned above. Ouch to 50mil insurance on that Python and going back to a Sidey.

There isn't a bank but you can protect your investment, after a fashion, by buying more ships. Should you crash and have to eat a high insurance payment - or worse be unable to pay the insurance at all - you can at least jump back into another ship and either carry on or sell it to release funds.

Congrats on buying the best game in history.... Even if its not quite finished yet...

First point id like to make is that docking on the wrong pad is a serious offence (though i cant quite accept it as being punishable by death). In any case I guess that you have learned your lesson and won't make that mistake again.

Second point Why would you expect to be able to loose a game completly (IE you got killed) and yet still retain all of your previous progress ? that is a very xbox type attitude, too answer your question however there is a type of insurance, when you die you can ressurect at a cost of around 15% of the cost of your ship provided that you have the money in the bank. If you look at your status on the right hand interface it actually shows you the buy back cost, do not ever leave dock without this amount held in reserve, if you do and you die, thens its back to the start i'm afraid.....

I would like to see a change in the draconian penalty for docking mishaps. Death is a bit extreme for a parking violation.
This must have been thought up by someone who has had bad experiences driving about town :).

If they didnt have these draconian laws, space stations would be full of yahoos ramming you into walls, taking up your parking space, and undoubtedly other unforeseen milarki. The odd early game death is well worth the peace and tranquillity you receive when you are flying your gazillion credit trade ship.

The thing is the game has a steep learning curve, it really does and a lot of folk forget that when they have been playing for a couple of weeks. The punishments seem harsh when you start out with very little capital but once you get a bit of money behind you and get a bit more experience you'll be fine. Stick with it!

There's plenty of practice to be had on the training module. Get familiar with he docking procedures before trying your hand in the game!

Penalties

I see your point, but...death ? How about just an enormous fine or a confiscation of some sort ?

The death penalty allows the station to clear out loiterers quickly once they have been identified. Even if you don't play in Open you're going to be happy with this arrangement sooner or later (NPCs can get their dumb ships stuck in the most inconvenient places).

I'm thinking of it from an immersiveness (is that a word ?) standpoint. When something patently absurd happens, it immediately destroys the "immersiveness".
I become acutely aware that I'm just another sad, pasty sod sitting in a dark room in front of a display.
That said, I completely understand the prevailing viewpoint and will not presume to second-guess the game designers.
