New Player, looking for advice

Greetings All,

Had real trouble with the third scenario (Mouse+Keyboard). Some fiddling with the command setup helped, along with practice of course.

Joystick and throttle should be arriving soon :)

Started with the multiplayer but the biggest problem here is finding a target and then once found, killing it before someone else jumps in.

I've tried Low and High Intensity areas around Eranin.

Selecting Federation as my faction in the hopes of more targets resulted in a quick death at the hands of an opposing Player. I can't argue with that at all, not with my flying, but all in all the lack of targets is making the cash grind for a second pulse laser pitifully slow.

Any suggestions?

Hey Taylor,

I don't know if I would call it 'good advice' or not, but I can tell you what has worked for me so far.

I started out in Eranin and went to the low intensity conflict zone, declaring for federal. Perhaps it was the time of day that I tend to play, but I didn't really run into many other PCs. I ground out there, picking off sidewinders and cobras, running when I got attacked. Eventually I was able to get the 2nd pulse laser.

From there, I used the 2 pulse lasers (fixed) to get more kills and creds until I had earned about 15k. After that I found a system that was dealing gimballed pulse lasers and bought a pair of them.

With the gimballed pulse lasers I went to the Federal distress signal area in Eranin, declared for Eranin and started picking off federal fighters. They are easy to kill and the gimballed lasers make it much much faster.

Since that time I have earned enough to purchase and Eagle and now have another 70k or so in the bank. I really don't play all that often, so someone who is dedicated could make a lot more.

Again, I am pretty new here myself, but this worked for me.

Hope it helps!

The gimballed lasers got very heavily nerfed so it's not AS Fast it used to be.

Im not pro... but I can help out.

Dont be afraid to die in the starter ship. Its dirt cheap.

Most of the time people align with Eranin. If you want a guarantee of PvP id suggest Federal side.

If you decide to fly an Eagle, id suggest two lasers of some sort and a missile launcher for when things get hairy. You can basically kill anything under a Cobra with 4 shots or less so its came in handy when more than one person is shooting at me... but it costs 10k to fully restock or 800 per. It really comes down to a matter of pride at that point. Lol

Even before the nerf I didnt like gimballs. Too weak and if you mixed them with fixed their reticule was distracting imo. Fixed all the way for me.

And most of all.... its just a game, an unfinished one at that. So dont quit before its begun. By the way, joystick makes a huge difference imo. You will pick up the feel instantly.

Avoid fighting UNTIL you have that second laser. Grind the trade instead. 10-15 profitable trade runs will earn you enough for another laser. Only then should you go farming in the conflict zones.

I'm not entirely sure a flightstick is better than keyboard+mouse *gasp* Seems to me so far that if you practise enough (patience!) the mouse is potentially more precise in combat. The most important buttons at your disposal in combat are Q+E if you actually want to hit anything, and I don't think the rudder functions on flight sticks are any better.

One thing I do know is that the 360 controller is pants if you're serious about combat, although it's way easier to get started with.

Thanks for all the helpful comments guys. I'll keep plugging at it and may try the trade route for that 2nd Laser ( I had assumed it won't be worth it this early with such a small ship)

Please understand, I wasn't asking for an easier game, just more available targets.

Would you believe my CH Pro Throttle turned up this morning!

I had selected standard delivery from FlightStore and 21 hours later it was in my hands!

The joystick is coming from elsewhere having been let down repeatedly by my local store but very impressed with the speed of delivery on the Throttle from FlightStore.

( Please note : For the purposes of balance, other suppliers exist. The one above was mentioned because it was the first to respond to my stock inquiry (same morning), charged no more than anyone else, provided free delivery and were VERY FAST )

My first week

I've had the game nearly a week now and other than one particularly aggressive and expensive docking pylon I've not had any major set backs.

I still find it hard to get targets or frustrating not getting credit when I've done 97% of the damage (need to work on getting that last 3% quicker)

Even with only 4 units of cargo space, it seems a much quicker way of gaining credits but its not really giving me much opportunity to improve my combat skills.

I finally got around to visiting the Anarchy system of LP 98-132 today but when I attempted to dock at Freeport the Docking Request repeatedly timed out and I gave up after about a dozen attempts.

I don't know if it was a game glitch but I began to wonder if, being an Anarchy system, the inhabitants have truly rejected all form of rules and regulations and have thus dispensed with the whole docking request procedure.

I had visions of my comm traffic being patched through to an empty and forgotten control-room while other more knowledgeable players zipped in and out using whatever docking bays were available.

Nah, just a glitch. You need to keep trying.

Its slow going trading with the sidewinder, but once you reach hauler stage it speeds up alot.

@Taylor

Hope you don’t mind, I am not trying to hijack your thread. I’m new too, and have a few questions and thought if it was o.k. rather than start another thread, that I could ask my questions here too. Hope that’s o.k.
___

My questions:
As I no doubt will get killed lots of times, I was just wondering, when your killed, do you loose your saved credits ?
I know you have to be insured to protect the ship, but wasn’t sure regards any saved credits.
Also is there a place to go to practice i.e. against ai etc, you know get used to the ship and so on ?

__
Getting the game tomorrow, pretty excited about it, not played space games for over 20yrs..

Thanks.

PS: Sorry again @taylor, hope you don’t mind me using your thread.. :)

@cpttrading - Not at all , makes sense to me.

To answer your other questions...

Each time your ship is destroyed you have the option of either buying back your old ship with all its modifications or taking the free starting ship with its one pulse laser.

When you first start there is no reason to take anything other than the free ship.

So, No, you don't lose your credits in that sense.

But don't forget that this is a Beta and I believe that credits are reset from time to time.

If you just want to practice against the AI there are some single player combat scenarios.

"not played space games for 20 over years... "

They seem to be rather like buses , you await absolutely ages and then ....
