Newcomer / Intro new player, need help for basic flight

Hey everyone,

Yeah, I know how that title sounds... but it seems I am too stupid to fly a ship in this game. :)
I am at my 3rd try with ED during the last few years, so I need some advice for basic flight, turning etc. I can't even finish the tutorials, the one where you have to destroy the moving ship. I am using a keyboard and mouse and I can't stop spinning. I read a bit about controls and custom binds files, I even tried a few of them that made the controls better but then I can't turn fast enough to face the enemy ship. I also have a Xbox controller, didn't tried it yet as I told myself that "it can't be that hard, I played both Freespace games many years ago so I'm good"...
These being said, I would love some advice, ideas, what to try, what to change etc, just point me in the right direction.

Apologies in advance if there is another place/thread for this and I didn't find it. Thank you.

It sounds as of your are flying FA off. You need FA on, flight assist on. At this point the flight model becomes that of an atmospheric flight sim. There is no reason as a basic pilot to ever turn FA off. Also the flight model remains that of an aircraft expect when docking. At that point the x,y,z lateral thrusters are of use. Look at the beginners guide at the top of this section for key advice. Keyboard and mouse is quite workable. Keyboard for roll, mouse for pitch and yaw. Other options are available.

You need to make your mind up which it is :D

Can't stop spinning sound like you have Flight Assist Off (though I don't think the tutorials give that option) 🤔

Can't turn fast enough sounds like you're not in the throttle blue zone - but pretty sure the tutorials tell you about that 🤔

I'm sure there are plenty of basic videos about flight available from Youtube and also from the tutorials area in-game. Good luck!

FA on or off is in your control options by the way. I would map this to something deliberately away from other keys so engaging or disengaging is somehting you really want to do and not hit by mistake.

FAoff can result in some fantastic flying manoeuvres but it takes practice. Some pilots swear by it. I can't get the hang of it yet.

He said he's flying mouse - I don't, but isn't there an option to switch between relative mouse and something else?

In any case, @daniyyel :
a) welcome to the Galaxy
b) try the gamepad. You can use the keyboard besides for less often used commands, ED supports all matters of combined input devices.

IIRC the default control setup uses mouse axis left-right for roll. Since the mouse has no centre point like a flight stick you have to move the mouse back to the centre to stop rolling. The "relative mouse" setting emulates a flight stick returning to centre. If you hold the mouse still the steering signal will fade away in a few seconds (enable relative mouse in options, it's off by default). Also it's much easier to fly if you map yaw to mouse axis left-right and roll to the keyboard (A and D or Q and E or whatever you like). To roll tap the keys for just a second don't keep them pushed down or you'll keep rolling again. It takes some practice to get used to but it works fine. Some of the best combat pilots fly with keyboard and (relative) mouse.

Yeah, I fly keyboard and mouse. You get used to it is all I can say. If you can fly a basic ship and shoo a container you are probably ready to try the game. If you die you just start over, no big deal (most of us did in the early days).
