New Player Needing Assistance

Hello Elite Community!

I am a new player to Elite Dangerous and need some help or tips from veteran commanders. I am having a difficult time adjusting to controlling my ship during fights. The control setting are at default at the moment. I seem to have trouble moving side to side or turning. One of the biggest things I do is spin which makes me dizzy and frustrated lol. I am using my mouse and keyboard. The keyboard seems to be pretty straight forward but my mouse throws me off when I start to fight and endlessly spin in a circle :( any tips or help would be appreciated.

I spent 20 minutes fiddling with controls before doing anything meaningful in the game, I'd recommend all new players do.

For me,
Q = Throttle Left
R = Throttle Right
W = Throttle Forward
S = Throttle Reverse

A = Roll Left
D = Roll Right

I let my mouse control yaw and yaw is inverted (down is up, up is down). That's probably what you'd expect in a flight sim.

Mess around with it until you're comfortable with the layout.

Only my opinion, but having started using K&M in Beta, it was a worthwhile investment in a flight stick. The difference is incalculable.

As Stab666 stated, a flight stick or joystick makes controlling the ship much easier in my opinion as well... I bought a Logitech Extreme 3d Pro for only about $25, and it works great if you don't want to spend tons.

i would not even dream of not using a joystick, just like i did in elite 1 on my amiga. They are always always at car boot sales/yard sales.

i can only say that flying with M + KB is not for everyone. With enough practice it can easily rival Joysticks. (alot of practice, joysticks are much faster to learn in comparison)

Can't really help with a k+m setup - flying with mouse is never easy in most flight/space sims!
I bought an xbox controller (pc version) a long time ago for driving and flight games, it was only about 20 quid.

The xbox controller was ok for elite but like most others I wound up getting a flight stick and haven't looked back.

Ok I went over the top and got the x52 pro but you can pick up a reasonable flight stick for slightly more than the xbox pad I got.

Flight stick!!!!

Imagine being a baby fighting a raptor -- that's mouse and keyboard. Now imagine you're a raptor fighting a baby -- that's flightstick.

Now imagine being a T-REX fighting a baby..... that's flightstick, oculus rift, and voice attack. Let's just say... I eat a lot of babies and I burp out their rattles.

The difference is not just night and day.... it's moon and earth. One is lifeless husk, the other is teeming with awesomeness.

Need I go on?

Mouse and keyboard is completely viable and gives the same amount of control once you get used to it. I can land my Cobra in 5 seconds on the first try with MB now without even scratching a pain. Only difference between stick and MB is that stick feels more "immersive". But that is pretty expensive piece of novelty if you ask me.

My advice is just stick with the default scheme and soon it will come to you. Default MB scheme from frontier is actually quite good. It is strange at first, but once it gets into your blood, you will fly like and eagle.

Hello mate,
You could go to the "newcomer's" forum and read the guides there, it gives you an alternative binding system which I use and love :
- get mouse X axis to yaw instead of roll, less dizzying.
- set WASD or ZQSD (i'm an azerty guy) to vertical and horizontal pushes
- QE or AE to roll/bank
- RF to thrust forward/backward (this will be useful for fine tuning your landing position)
- mouse wheel to speed increment 25% (when you time it right you can get spot on over the docking target with just 25% speed)

here, let me get the link : https://forums.frontier.co.uk/showthread.php?t=80291

Hi Vinceman! You will quickly find that...

Is THE only way to fly! (IMO)

I'm using a ps3 controller and doing just fine. Of course I have had lots of practice flying in planetside 2 but figuring out your control preference will definitely help you starting out. Don't be tied to default controls (even though it's completely viable and almost identical to planetside controls, and I have seen amazing pilots using default controls there) and take your time setting things up. The game's not going anywhere :p

Is it possible to use a ps4 controller?
