New player question

Im sure you all have seen this a thousand times. Sorry for the repeat. After a few hours playing, i decided to try a mining mission. It requires cobalt. I am in Dromi starting system. Should i even bother with this or move to a new area first? Not much for equipment such as scanners here. Thanks for any advice.

Hello, welcome to the game and forum.

I wouldn’t have thought you have a ship equipped for mining, could be a while before you get all you need to do those missions. Run data missions, upgrade you ship. Maybe run some trade missions. Scan every system in the FSS to gain more credits. As you go from station to to station, keep an eye on who sells what mining equipment.

eventually you have enough to get the equipment/ship you need. At that point, you don’t really need those mining missions, you can go mining and sell your gains at a station.

Some good advice above.
But for mining you need the following.
1) cargo space (32t or more)
2) a refinery
3) a collector limpet controller size 5 or 3
4) a prospector limpet controller. A rated
5) mining lasers
Theres more too but lasers will get you started.
And Don't forget your limpets.
Don't fly without a rebuy.
Be prepared to be attacked!@ pirates will want a piece.

But if you want to attempt it, you need at minimum:
A suitable Rocky Ring.
Mining Layzors.
A refinery.
Cargo racks.

But that's the bare minimum, mining is pretty involved.
You should add:

Prospector limpets.
Collection limpets.

I agree with Lorenzo, leave it for now, have a dabble later.
This; though I highly recommend collector limpets. Going without them and manually scooping all your fragments is like jumping off a bridge while dumping boiling water all over yourself.

This is the starter system and there are only basic ships there. You can mine quite well in a sidewinder, but it depends how much Cobalt the mission asks for. You can carry 9T in a Sidewinder if you fill up the refinery before leaving. Use a build like this:

The problem is that by the time you've outfitted your ship, you could probably have made a lot more money doing something else, like bounty farming in the high resource extraction site in Dromi, which pays over 5 mil per hour. after a couple of hours there, you can get a T6 and do some serious mining for platinum (15 mil/hr) or Road to Riches planet scanning ( 10 -20 mil/hr) or Robigo passenger missions (60 mil hr).

Here's how to get those bounties without risk:

Of course! Totally missed OP said Dromi!
You can still have a go at mining there though, I did it on my alt account and bought a Cobra.

Thank you everyone. Also i did get an unsolicited friend request that i didnt want to take due to the other threads i saw here regarding new players. I really appreciate the guidance. Im starting to take a few missions and trying to get my feet wet outside the newbie system as well. Im promoted to "almost penniless: lol

Once you've been promoted, there's no "getting your feet wet". It's sink or swim. If you now dock outside the newbie zone, that permit gets revoked.

Mind, we all did that and survived.

No, no, no! 🤔
Collecting without limpets is more like standing on one foot after taking two sleeping tablets. No adrenaline involved at all, at all. ;)
But it is not a bad idea to do it until you have picked up a basic skill.

Don't forget that the Dromi system is your starting point for beginners. It allows you to gain the experience you'll need once you leave, there is no going back into the system once you leave, so be sure to be ready. Hope you do well in your adventures cdr

I wouldn't be too panicy about friend requests. Yes, there was that mining carrier incident, but I think you'll find most requests are just Cmdrs looking to wing up, meet other like minded Cmdrs, populate their friends list for future adventures, etc. I started a PC account about a monthish(?) and ended up with a fair few new friends before leaving the start area - which I only stayed in for two short play sessions. Those probably came about because I was that guy in system chat answering all the noob questions. Just being in the start area might get you a few requests simply because you're at the same stage as others.
